Last Friday marked the birthday of Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy. A men's magazine which, as you know, everyone reads only for the articles.

In honor of Hef's birthday, noted film critic Roger Ebert tweeted an excellent photo from his archives: Hefner hanging out with Russ Meyer, Dolly Read and Cynthia Myers on the set of "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." Meyer was one of the early photographers for Playboy, though he eventually made a name for himself in film with his campy sensibilities and proclivity for casting voluptuous women (see: "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," "Mondo Topless"). Meyer was once contracted by recently deceased Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren to direct a film for the Pistols to star in. The director asked Roger Ebert to write the script; the result -- titled "Who Killed Bambi?" -- went unproduced, though the UK punk band did go on to star in their own movie: the mockumentary, "The Great Rock & Roll Swindle." Few things are more identifiable to New Orleans than the Rebirth Brass Band. It's fitting then that "The Wire" creator David Simon kicks off his post-Katrina Crescent City series with a second line featuring the legendary performers. Rebirth was recently in New York City for a couple of shows, and we chatted with bass drummer and co-founder Keith Frazier to hear his thoughts on the series and its New Orleans inspiration.

Title: "The Zillo Beast"

Writer / Director: Craig Titley / Giancarlo Volpi

Tagline: "Choose what is right, not what is easy."

Story: Republic and Separatist forces are locked in battle on the contested planet of Malastare. Anakin Skywalker and Mace Windu struggle against overwhelming odds, a treaty with the local Dug population hinging on their success. In the face of overwhelming opposition, Chancellor Palpatine authorizes the use of a super-weapon designed to cripple the droid forces while leaving organics intact. Words of war and peace were had between Ice-T and Aimee Mann over the last 24 hours. In an exchange unlike any other I've seen since I started writing Twitter-Wood, the singer/songwriter (and "Big Lebowski" actress) questioned Ice's acting abilities in a tweet she probably would have preferred to leave private. Ice-T caught wind, though, because as most TW followers know, he as a small army in the Twitterverse.

In other posts, Roger Ebert earned my vote for Twitter Pic of the millenium with his birthday shout-out to Hugh Hefner. You can gaze upon it after the jump alongside thoughts about Robert Pattinson playing Kurt Cobain and Jackie Chan's birthday present from the Will Smith family. It's all in Twitter-Wood for April 9th, 2010. Read More...

To be fair, "Sex & the City" has always been about the ladies. Getting angry at the new trailer for the sequel to the 2008 movie which was itself spun off of the HBO series for not catering to guys is kind of like getting angry at the sun for setting every day. These are just established facts. Day turns into night and "Sex & the City" is geared towards a female audience. Plus: the sequel opens on May 30, opposite video game adaptation "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." It's not like us dudes won't have anything to do that day.

That said, I'd like to see "Sex & the City 3" go for a wider audience. The coming sequel tells a destination story: the ladies head to Abu Dhabi on the eve of Carrie Bradshaw's (Sarah Jessica Parker) wedding. Since we've already jumped that particular shark, I've come up with a few suggestions the brainstormers might want to keep in mind when they start thinking about where to send the New York City-based foursome in the third film outing. You can be forgiven for not having heard of "I Love You, Phillip Morris," even though it stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. The movie premiered at Sundance in 2008, where it did well. It has since been scheduled for release numerous times in the United States, but it's yet to actually surface. The next release date was April 30.

Was.

A new post on Jim Carrey's official website appeared today, revealing that the April 30 opening isn't going to happen. In fact, an opening might not happen at all. "Phillip Morris" has, in fact, been "postponed indefinitely." And I have to ask: what gives?! Read More...

MTV recently caught up with "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" star Teresa Palmer. She got to talking about a live-action "Justice League" movie that Warner Bros. was pulling together some time back. Palmer confirmed that she was in for the role of Talia Al Ghul, the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul, who you might remember as the villain from "Batman Begins." She also confirmed that "Sorcerer's" star Jay Baruchel was up for the film's villain role. Check out the video below to hear it straight from her and head over to MTV Splash Page for the full story.
