"Elektra Luxx" is the second entry in a planned trilogy from filmmaker Sebastian Gutierrez. "Women in Trouble," the first in the trilogy, premiered at South By Southwest last year and "Elektra" followed suit this year. The first movie followed a large group of women in Los Angeles who were either hiding or discovering secrets in their lives. The follow-up narrows the focus somewhat, to the titular porn actress (played by Carla Gugino) and how an unexpected pregnancy brings complications into her life.
MTV's Josh Horowitz sat down with stars Malin Akerman and Emmanuelle Chriqui in Austin during SXSW and he asked them about the experience of shooting a movie with such a strong cast of female performers.
"[It's] exciting on so many levels," Chriqui said. "Exciting because, yes it's empowering, it's all us women. But we're also really close friends that have sort of met along the years in the business. So with all our crazy schedules, to come together and to be able to do something that you can really sink your teeth into and celebrate each other is, to me, one of the best parts of doing what we do." Mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer said last summer that the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" will come before "The Lone Ranger." It certainly looks like that's going to be the case, but Bruckheimer is nonetheless still actively working on bringing the adaptation of the classic TV series to the big screen.
Speaking to MTV's Larry Carroll at ShoWest last week, Bruckheimer gave a fairly hefty status update on where things are at with "The Lone Ranger."
"'The Lone Ranger' is another one that we're working on and Johnny [Depp]wants to play Tonto, so we're excited about that," he said. "That hopefully will get done in the next year or so. We're still working on the screenplay." Read more...

If Sony needs a writer for their 3-D "Popeye" project, they've got one enthusiastic applicant on Twitter by the name of Brian Lynch. He and Diablo Cody exchanged thoughts on a treatment today, and predicted what direction they believe the movie will take.
Edgar Wright, meanwhile, already knows what direction "Kick-Ass" takes, and he shared his post-screening assessment while Chistopher Mintz-Plasse reflected on the film's London premiere last night. Find out about the event yourself after the jump and see who tried out for "The Smurfs," who has a Chatroulette habit, what Kristen Bell was up to last night and who got bumped by Chris Rock. It's all in Twitter-Wood for March 23rd, 2010. Read more...

The debut trailer for "Eclipse" premiered only a couple weeks ago, kicking off what is sure to be a serious promotional campaign leading up to third "Twilight" film's release on June 30. The second salvo was fired today in Summit Entertainment's promo assault, a shiny, new teaser poster featuring stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.
While the first movie focused primarily on Bella's (Stewart) relationship with Edward (Pattinson), and the second -- "New Moon" -- focused on her friendship with Jacob (Lautner), this third movie has more of a love triangle thing going on, all while a vengeful vampiress seeks revenge for the death of her lover. You all know this better than I do though, so why don't you just hit the jump for the poster? Read more...

Can Tom Hanks do for modern punk fans what he did for mothers and daughters? After successfully adapting the ABBA-based musical "Mamma Mia!" into a global blockbuster ($610 million worldwide gross, mostly from outside the U.S.), Hanks may produce a film version of "American Idiot," the new stage show based on Green Day's same-titled concept album. According to Deadline.com, Hanks' and Gary Goetzman's The Playtone Company are in talks to buy the rights to the musical, which debuted in Berkeley last fall and opens on Broadway April 20.
Consisting of 23 Green Day songs and little additional dialogue, the stage version of "American Idiot" was written by the band's front man, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Tony-winning director Michael Mayer ("Spring Awakening"). It features the same plot as the album, telling the stories of three friends from a suburban town who wind up with diverging destinies. One joins the army, one moves to the big city and one stays put in suburbia. Read more...

Whether or not you enjoy Diablo Cody's work, you have to credit her willingness to speak her mind, for better or worse. Still, it's certainly a bit jarring to hear Cody badmouthing her own creations like "Jennifer's Body" and Showtime's "The United States of Tara" in a public forum.
Speaking with New York Magazine, Cody said that while the upcoming second season of "Tara" is quite strong, she wouldn't have even bothered watching the first season if she wasn't involved creatively. Cody also said that she "did not have any fun" on "Jennifer's Body," a film that failed to capture commercial success despite the star power of Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. Read more...

Despite having penned some seriously bleak subject matter in the pages of his comic books, Kevin Smith isn't exactly known for creating terrifying film fare — but his reputation is about to go down that dark path, thanks to a little horror project called "Red State."
The outspoken filmmaker took to his Twitter feed this morning to reveal that "Red State," a horror movie that Smith has championed since 2007, will begin shooting in July. Smith also revealed that he's currently in the process of writing the script for "Hit Somebody," which he'll begin shooting with Seann William Scott after wrapping production on "Red State."
"I talk about lots of stuff I wanna do that either happens years later or never happens at all," he wrote. "Happy to report 'Red State' is not the latter." Read more...

Today is the 100th birthday of Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. He died back in 1998, but his films carry on his legacy in many ways. First, obviously, there are the literal titles that continue to be watched and studied religiously (13 of them are being aired on Turner Classic Movies today). Second, there are the upcoming remakes of "Seven Samurai," "High and Low," "Rashomon" and "Ikiru" in development. And third, there are those films directly inspired by Kurosawa's films.
Kurosawa himself had many influences, and a number of his films were loose remakes or direct adaptations of everything from Westerns to Dostoyevsky to films noir to Shakespeare. So it's unlikely he'd be upset about the idea that his work has gone on to influence some of today's most notable filmmakers. He might even be enjoying some of the following blockbuster movies, all owing much to his work, from beyond the grave: Read more...
