FROM MTV.COM: In the eyes of the Academy Awards, "The Hurt Locker" was the Best Picture of 2009. But a loyal army of Twilighters feel differently — and this week, they're making their opinions known at one of Hollywood's most visible annual conventions.

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" has been selected for the ShoWest/Fandango Fan Choice Award, which will be presented Thursday at ShoWest's Final Night Banquet and Award Ceremony at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas. The Fan Choice Award was voted on by nearly 50,000 moviegoers, who were asked on Fandango to select their favorite film of 2009.

Julianne Moore, who appears with Amanda Seyfried in the new film "Chloe" (opening in limited release next week), will act opposite another hot young starlet in a film titled "Backwoods." According to Roger Friedman at Showbiz411, the four-time Oscar-nominated actress will be joined by "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart in the film, which Moore's husband, Bart Freundlich, is directing.

All that is revealed about the plot of "Backwoods" is that it involves the end of the world, a concept Moore has dealt with previously in "Children of Men" and "Blindness," two very different stories. I immediately presumed the actresses would play mother and daughter, but there's no actual reasoning for this. I just think it'd be neat to have Stewart, who played daughter to Jodie Foster in "Panic Room," now have the same role opposite the actress who replaced Foster in the "Silence of the Lambs"/"Hannibal" franchise. FROM SPLASH PAGE: If "Incredible Hulk" star Edward Norton had his way, not only would his former director Louis Leterrier direct Marvel's upcoming superhero team-up "The Avengers," but he'd get a similar level of creative control as Christopher Nolan did for "The Dark Knight."

"I loved Louis Leterrier," Norton told MTV News during the South by Southwest Film Festival. "I thought he was just the greatest guy. I wish they'd given him more free reign than they did."

Summit has had an incredible run these past few years. Yes, it's thanks in no small part to "Twilight." But don't discount the cred -- both street and dollars -- they've earned from "The Hurt Locker," "The Brothers Bloom," "The Ghost Writer," "Once" and -- if you go back far enough -- fan and critical faves "Memento," "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

The point of all this is: when Summit picks up a shiny, new original pitch, I'm going to sit up and pay attention. Especially when said pitch involves hunting witches under the watchful eye of "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov. This is apparently happening. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Back in the 1950s, it was an entertaining notion to imagine Major League Baseball as a world where record-breaking sluggers could appear overnight, selling their souls for the ability to crush a baseball in a world where those damn Yankees win every year. Now, Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal are attached to a remake of one of the all-time classic movie musicals — and although the filmmaker has big plans for an update, he's quick to point out that the plot of "Damn Yankees" is actually more plausible in today's world.

"If a character like Joe Hardy — who's the character in 'Damn Yankees' — sprung out of nowhere and was hitting 70 home runs in a season, who would not think immediately 'steroids'?" said writer/director Todd Graff, who has cast Gyllenhaal in the Tab Hunter role of a baseball fan who sells his soul to become the greatest player. "So [steroids] is not even a side character for us; it's our main character. No one is going to think, 'Oh, it's because he made a deal with the devil!' They'd think, 'He's juicing!' "

There's been a flurry of activity surrounding the Muppets over the past few months. First, there were those great Muppets Studio YouTube video (see: "Bohemian Rhapsody"). Then there was word that Disney is very interested in having "The Flight of the Conchords" co-creator James Bobin direct. Then, the first details emerged about the story laid out in the script written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller.

The awesome news today is the Segel will also join the cast as the live-action star, and Bobin is "on board" to direct, according to a report on THR's Heat Vision blog. Segel will also produce with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films/TV ("The Proposal"). Read More...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that filmmaker Martin Scorsese, the man who gave us the likes of "Goodfellas" and "Taxi Driver," is following up "Shutter Island," his latest, with something for the whole family. "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," by Brian Selznick, is a 2008 Caldecott Medal winning historical-fiction tale of the titular young boy who lives in a Paris train station. The story is said to be inspired by formative French filmmaker Georges Méliès, a man who developed many of cinema's earliest special effects and camera tricks, as well as one of the early artists to twist the medium for the purposes of storytelling.

It seems that the production is kicking into high gear, as a number of high-profile players appear to be in the process of signing on to join Scorsese in his latest adventure. Deadline Hollywood reports (unsourced) that a sizable group of players is in the negotiations phase and landing key roles in the director's next effort. Read More...

And here I thought nothing in this world could be more disturbing than the Robert Pattinson body pillow. One day I'll learn life's most important truth: there's always something more disturbing.

This time, I blame "New Moon" actor and Wolf Pack-er Alex Meraz for finding it. There was a TwiCon over the weekend that he attended, and he snapped a pic while he was there of a Robert Pattinson/Edward Cullen blow-up doll. Reading the twitpic's comments, it seems that blow-up RPattz is something of a regular at "Twilight" gatherings, and a popular one too. That's cool... but the doll still sort of creeps me out. Decide for yourself after the jump. Read More...

The planned April 22 release date for "Avatar" on Blu-ray and DVD has been known for awhile, so it's not exactly breaking news that the Los Angeles Times is reporting. It had also been pretty widely reported that this home video release -- the first of several -- would be light on bonus content. Well it turns out that "light" actually means "completely devoid" in this case.

The aim in abandoning all extras -- which includes stripping down menus as well as removing trailers and studio promotions -- is to fill every bit of space on the disc with a top-notch audio/video presentation. Before you get cynical and starting shouting "marketing ploy!" to the heavens, know too that the April 22 release is planned for a Thursday (instead of the usual Tuesday), so that it can coincide with Earth Day. This will include a tie-in environmental campaign to be announced by director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau at a March 23 press conference. Read More...

Last June, MTV News traveled up to Vancouver to visit the set of "Tron Legacy," Disney's 3-D stand-alone sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic. Along with a select group of journalists, we toured the set, talked to cast and crew and immersed ourselves in all things "Tron."

A studio-imposed embargo has now lifted and we can bring you the first of our interviews. Here's some of what Jeff Bridges — the star of both the original film and the new one in the role of Kevin Flynn — had to say.

Question: How has Flynn changed?

Jeff Bridges: It’s certainly a different deal. We made "Tron," there was no Internet, man. No cell phones. No laptops or any of that stuff. So it's a completely different world that we're showing up in here and the look of the film, it certainly benefits from that. Read More...
