One of the big names at South By Southwest last weekend was Michel Gondry. As the man responsible for one of the finest films in recent memory -- "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" -- people tend to sit up and take notice whenever he does something new. And while he'll next be trying his hand at a spectacle-driven blockbuster in "The Green Hornet," he was at the Austin entertainment conference to promote his new documentary, "The Thorn in the Heart."

The doc is an incredibly personal one for the filmmaker, as it takes an up-close look at the life of the Gondry family, specifically his mother, aunt and cousin. When MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke to Gondry over the weekend, he asked what the appeal of capturing non-fiction on film is.

"I want to do more documentaries to really learn to get people to tell us some things we don't know," he explained. Read More...

Now that you've become a fan of Christoph Waltz through his Oscar-winning performance as Hans Landa in "Inglourious Basterds," can the Austrian actor woo you to Europe for more? The 30-year vet has done a lot of film and TV work, mostly in Germany and the UK. Despite his sudden success in America, he's likely to stay situated in London and Berlin rather than move out to Hollywood to cash in on his winnings.

Yes, he'll co-star in two high-profile Hollywood productions, "The Green Lantern" and "Water for Elephants," as a villain in both. But Waltz also appears to be using this new found fame as an opportunity to make his feature directorial debut with a German-language romantic comedy he's written titled "Auf und Davon" ("Up and Away"). This won't be his first effort behind the camera, as he wrote and directed a 2000 German TV movie, but it will be his first big screen gig in this capacity. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: This April, Jennifer Lopez will be heading back to the big screen in the romantic comedy, "The Back-Up Plan," her first in the genre since 2005's "Monster-In-Law" and her first film four years (since 2006's "El Cantante"). After that film's release on April 23, Lopez says she has no definite plans for her next project, but she is reportedly in talks to play the lead in a remake of "Overboard."

"We're looking at a couple of things," she told MTV News said while promoting "The Back-Up Plan" at ShoWest in Las Vegas. "I'm really trying to focus right now on finishing my record so that it can come out in the summer like we're planning. So, that's where my main focus is and then the movies come."

For the past bunch of weeks, MTV has been running a horror flick every Saturday at 10pm. Last week it was "Slither," about an alien force the invades the planet in the form of red, slimy-looking slug-things. This week we've got "Deep Blue Sea," which is notable for a number of reasons: there are sharks that think, Sam Jackson, LL Cool J and what is perhaps the best death scene ever recorded on film (spoiler alert).

Get ready, readers. We have a lot of stuff coming your way from ShoWest. I've looked at the shoot reports and it's pretty dizzying. Especially when you consider that we're still sorting through everything from last weekend at South By Southwest. My goal now is to stall you with a little bit of misdirection. Look! Pretty pictures!

In the image below you can see Neil Patrick Harris, who recently joined the cast of "The Smurfs" as the live-action lead, and Vanessa Hudgens, who we'll see next year in Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch." Before all that however, we'll see Harris and Hudgens both in the "Beauty and the Beast"-inspired "Beastly." Click the image below to check out our full ShoWest image gallery.

One of the more exciting screenings last weekend during the film-focused portion of South By Southwest was the U.S. premiere of "Micmacs," the latest dreamworld vision from French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I haven't seen the movie yet, but it appear to focus on a group of friends who conspire to bring down two weapons manufacturers.

MTV's Josh Horowitz chatted with Jeunet, who is known for his unique visual style, at the Austin entertainment conference, and the director expressed interest in the growing 3-D trend and regret that it wasn't more widely embraced while he prepped for "Micmacs."

"I would have wanted to shoot 'Micmacs' in 3-D," he said. "It was too early, we didn't speak about [those possibilities] at that time. But now I regret it because I could imagine [it]. It could have been great." Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: With three big names — Gus Van Sant, Sofia Coppola and Bill Condon — being floated as potential candidates to direct "Breaking Dawn," it seems that, along with Robert Pattinson, both Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning have strong feelings about Van Sant.

"Oh my god! He just makes stunning movies. I just love his work," Stewart gushed at the red carpet for her new flick, "The Runaways," on Wednesday in New York. "I don't know exactly what he would bring to the film but he's [great]."

"Wolfman's got nards." With those three words, a cult legend was born. "The Monster Squad" is a bona fide '80s underground classic. Director/co-writer Fred Dekker, along with Shane Black, crafted a story in which a group of small-town kids obsessed with classic movie monsters find themselves caught up in a Dracula-led plot to unleash hell on the world. Along the way they meet Frankenstein's monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy and the Gill Man (i.e. the Creature from the Black Lagoon). There are plot holes a-plenty, questionable performances and middling production values... and yet something about this movie endures even today. I'm a fan, and proud of it.

Now, in Hollywood's misguided green campaign to recycle everything, the comedy/not-really-horror classic has been targeted for a remake, according to a report from Deadline Hollywood. By original producer Rob Cohen no less, who would also like to direct. He certainly has experience behind the camera -- "xXx," "The Fast and the Furious," "The Skulls," "The Rat Pack" -- I'm just not sure he's the right guy to do this, even if his heart's in the right place. One of the big news items yesterday was that "Alice in Wonderland" director Tim Burton would be taking on a 3-D, stop-motion animated adaptation of "The Addams Family." The report, which came from Deadline Hollywood, was detailed enough to reveal that Burton would be taking his inspiration from the original Charles Addams illustrations, rather than the 1960s TV series, Raul Julia/Anjelica Huston-starring movies or any of the other treatments that followed.

MTV immediately reached out to Burton's people for comment, and they've responded with some clarification after speaking with the filmmaker himself. "There is no truth to the story. Tim has not lined up any of his upcoming projects." Pay extra attention to that second sentence. Read More...

A report surfaced yesterday that Lucasfilm Animation is currently developing a kid-friendly "Star Wars" TV series based on the "Galactic Heroes" line of toys. These are action heroes designed for a younger audience, with exaggerated hands, feet and heads, and a vaguely anime look, especially around the face & eyes. The reported working title for the in-development series is "Squishies," and things have progressed far enough for a director to have been hired.

As I generally try to keep my finger on the pulse of all things "Star Wars," we reached out to Lucasfilm for comment. Here's what came back: "Lucasfilm Animation has many projects in development. One is for a younger audience but it’s in very early development and too early for any details." Read More...
