All signs are pointing to Alex Pettyfer having a great year. You'll see him -- sort of -- this summer in "Beastly," a modern-day retelling of "Beauty and the Beast." I say "sort of" because Pettyfer has the film's "beast" role, which means he's probably going to be fairly unrecognizable. We'll be seeing more of him soon enough though; some big things are happening for the young actor, as he told MTV's Larry Carroll last week at ShoWest.
"I can't really say at the moment, but I've got two movies that I think I just got offered today. So I might shoot them back-to-back," he said. "But I'm not gonna say anything, I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed." Read more...

That Michael Bay. He always wants to go bigger. Bigger robots, bigger explosions... bigger cast.
So today's news should come as no surprise. The "Transformers" director, who is busily prepping the third movie in the series for a summer 2011 release, revealed today on his website that three more names have joined the already star-studded cast, and an odd lineup at that. "The Hangover" supporting player Ken Jeong, frequent Coen brothers collaborator Frances McDormand and he-needs-no-introduction actor John Malkovich. Read more...

Last week at ShoWest in Las Vegas, filmmaker Jay Roach was honored as the Comedy Director of the Decade. He's probably known best these days as the director of "Meet the Parents" and "Meet the Fockers" (and the producer of the coming third movie in that series), but his formative work as a comedy director comes from the three "Austin Powers" movies. MTV's Larry Carroll sat down with Roach to talk about the award, and he managed to sneak in a few questions about the fourth "Austin Powers" movie.
"[Star Mike Myers is] working on ideas for it, people are definitely talking about it and I'm all good for it," Roach said matter-of-factly. "I love those characters." Read more...

Yes, "Kick-Ass" is MTV Splash Page territory. But Rick Marshall already posted the clip, so I'm going to share the love here too. Why? Because "Kick-Ass" looks... well... kickass! Averages Joes and Janes as costumed vigilantes, Nic Cage, Chris Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz... lots of awesome.
In our exclusive clip below, Mintz-Plasse's Red Mist shows the titular wannabe hero, played by Aaron Johnson, his badass ride, the Mistmobile. You'll get to see the whole damn thing for yourself when the movie hits theaters on April 16.

On this day in 1960, U.S. Patent number 2,929,222 was approved. Arthur L. Schawlow and Charles H. Townes became the legal inventors of the laser. Their patent ended up becoming the target of a lengthy, ongoing lawsuit, but one fact cannot be denied: with their new invention, the face of movies were forever changed.
Laser-like weapons in fiction of course predate the invention of the actual laser. Who cares though? Today is the laser's birthday, and we should celebrate that. So a few of the sci-fi-loving geeks here in the MTV newsroom got together and singled out our five favorite examples of the all-time best laser beams in movies. Read more...

FROM SPLASH PAGE: While nothing is official yet, it's being reported that actor Chris Evans has been offered the lead role in "The First Avenger: Captain America."
No stranger to comic book movies, "Captain America" would be the fourth such film in which Evans has had a prominent role (if the rumor turns out to be true and he accepts the role). But as readers know, it's been a long road to get to this point, filled with a multitude of actors who might or might not have been offered, auditioned for, or otherwise been connected with Marvel's red, white and blue soldier-turned-superhero, Steve Rogers.
So, where does Evans stand in your mind? Is he a good choice to sling Cap's shield and rally The Avengers? Can you see him standing toe-to-toe with "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr. and the new Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson, when Marvel Studios' blockbuster team-up film arrives in theaters?

The real "Bourne" franchise may have stalled, but we continue hearing about new franchise possibilities involving a female version of the amnesiac spy. The latest is Bold Films' "Blank Slate," an action thriller that Heat Vision reports is based around the idea of a female convict implanted with the memories and fighting abilities of a fallen CIA agent. The script is from Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, who penned one of my favorite action movies of all time (in spite of how ridiculous it is), "The Rock."
In addition to the obvious "Bourne Identity" comparison, the plot synopsis also reminds me of "Face/Off," "The Eye," "La Femme Nikita" and the 1996 Ray Liotta movie "Unforgettable," in which a detective takes an experimental drug that allows him to acquire memories of other people in order to track down his wife's murderer. Not to put down the originality of "Blank Slate," which I think could be a very awesome mix of all these films and be yet another stupid-fun action movie. Bring in John Woo or Luc Besson or a director of equal talent and it'll at least be a guilty pleasure. Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: While there were midnight parties for the "New Moon" DVD and Blu-ray release taking place across the country Friday night, only those living in the Los Angeles area were treated to the company of both the director and a main star. Director Chris Weitz and actress Nikki Reed traveled to the Wal-Mart in Santa Clarita to celebrate the release.
"I like to go to Wal-Mart to hold press conferences just at odd moments, so this is not my first time," Weitz joked when he spoke with MTV News at the event. "But usually people don't show up with cameras. I'm just talking to an imaginary microphone."

When it comes to eye candy in 2011, one of the hot prospects right now is "Sucker Punch," directed by Zack Snyder. Emily Browning stars as a young woman who is committed to a mental institution by her evil stepdad. In order to escape from the grim reality of her surroundings, she constructs an elaborate fantasy world in her head that casts her caretakers and fellow inmates in some unusual roles.
Last week, MTV's Larry Carroll spoke with Browning's co-star Vanessa Hudgens, who plays the ass-kicking, tomahawk-wielding Blondie in the movie. We've spoken to Hudgens, a former "High School Musical" star, a few times about her upcoming role. She's always been very excited about it, but now she's even moreso thanks to a recent development for the March 2011 release: 3-D.
"I am very excited about it because I finally get to be an extreme badass and kick butt," Hudgens said. "Actually, we didn't shoot it for 3-D and I just found out the other day. I could not be more thrilled. I'm just excited to know that when I'm throwing my tomahawk, it's gonna be right in your face." Read more...

There was news out of the UK yesterday that a fire on the set of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" left Hogwarts in ruins. The truth is not quite that dramatic, but it makes for compelling copy, right?
All of the "Harry Potter" films have been shot at Leavesden Film Studios, near Watford, Hertfordshire. Local paper Watford Observer reports that the fire started while second unit shooting was underway on Friday evening, on a courtyard scene that factors into a battle sequence -- presumably the climax -- in the second of the final two "Potter" films. The pyrotechnics-heavy work being done got a little bit out of control, leading to the fire. Warner Bros has already confirmed that none of the principal cast members were present, no one was injured and no equipment was damaged. Read more...
