Whether or not you enjoy Diablo Cody's work, you have to credit her willingness to speak her mind, for better or worse. Still, it's certainly a bit jarring to hear Cody badmouthing her own creations like "Jennifer's Body" and Showtime's "The United States of Tara" in a public forum.
Speaking with New York Magazine, Cody said that while the upcoming second season of "Tara" is quite strong, she wouldn't have even bothered watching the first season if she wasn't involved creatively. Cody also said that she "did not have any fun" on "Jennifer's Body," a film that failed to capture commercial success despite the star power of Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried.
Despite this negativity, Cody certainly hopes to have better luck on "Sweet Valley High," the novel series she's currently adapting for film.
"I grew up with those books, so it was an ultimate fantasy for a girl who grew up in a Midwestern suburb," she said of the project. "[It's] not, like, 'Atlas Shrugged' where people are like, 'You must have a tremendous amount of respect for this material, you better not f--- this up.' And yet, people have been surprisingly vocal about the fact that they don't want me to ruin 'Sweet Valley High.' It's like bubblegum, come on."
"Sweet Valley High" isn't Cody's only project, however. In addition to that and the second season of "Tara," the screenwriter is working on a currently untitled movie about "a woman who's stalking her high-school sweetheart."
"It has elements of humor, but it's pretty serious and f---ed up," she said. "You don't get to see women be antiheroes that often, where it's like somebody like Mickey Rourke, who gets a comeback in 'The Wrestler.' It's rarer that you'll have a studio say, 'Let's have an actress come back and be ugly!'"
