1. "Alice in Wonderland" ($34.5 million)
2. "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" ($21.8 million)
3. "The Bounty Hunter" ($21 million)
4. "Repo Men" ($6.2 million)
5. "She's Out of My League" ($6 million)
Given the massive success of James Cameron's "Avatar" and now Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," it's certainly looking like 3-D is the format to beat. For the third weekend in a row, "Alice" scored the top prize at the box office with a $34.5 million haul, just a 45% drop from last weekend's $62.7 intake. As of now, the film is sitting on top of a domestic gold pile worth $265.8 million.
But the continued success of "Alice" is far from a sure thing. Despite three wonderful weekends, Burton and Disney's latest fantasy epic is about to face some serious competition in the form of next weekend's "How to Train Your Dragon," DreamWorks' own entry into the 3-D marketplace. Whether or not the beast can knock down "Alice" remains to be seen, though it's almost certain that "Avatar" will fall out of the top ten for the first time since its December debut.
The top five finishers remained unchanged from Friday to Sunday with the exception of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "The Bounty Hunter." The Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy ultimately succumbed to the unexpected $21.8 million might of "Wimpy Kid," a total that earned the family film nearly $7 million past its production budget in just one weekend.
In addition to "How to Train Your Dragon," next weekend sees the release of "Hot Tub Time Machine," MGM's filthy-mouthed comedy starring John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke and Craig Robinson.
