One of the big news items yesterday was that "Alice in Wonderland" director Tim Burton would be taking on a 3-D, stop-motion animated adaptation of "The Addams Family." The report, which came from Deadline Hollywood, was detailed enough to reveal that Burton would be taking his inspiration from the original Charles Addams illustrations, rather than the 1960s TV series, Raul Julia/Anjelica Huston-starring movies or any of the other treatments that followed.
MTV immediately reached out to Burton's people for comment, and they've responded with some clarification after speaking with the filmmaker himself. "There is no truth to the story. Tim has not lined up any of his upcoming projects." Pay extra attention to that second sentence.
"The Addams Family" could very well be something that Burton will be working on in the near or far future, but there just haven't been any decisions made yet. "Alice" is still in theaters, and it's still performing quite well. There's no doubt that Burton will be back behind the camera sometime soon, but for now he's probably enjoying some well-earned relaxation time while audiences continue to be wowed by his "Wonderland."
Burton is also one of those guys with about a million things on his plate, so anything could be next. There's his long-talked-about adaptation of the TV series "Dark Shadows," which many had thought would be next, for one. And in the stop-motion realm, there's the remake of his 1984 short film "Frankenweenie." Burton is also rumored for a villain-focused telling of the "Sleeping Beauty" villain in "Maleficent" and he's attached, along with "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov, to produce an adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's excellent new novel, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."
