Hank Azaria of "The Simpsons" and "Mystery Men" and "Glee" actress Jayma Mays joined the credits for director Raja Gosnell's "Smurfs" movie, and Azaria will likely have to play up his age — or at least get uglier — for his role as Gargamel. The live-action/animated hybrid project will feature Mays as one of its two human leads; the other belongs to Neil Patrick Harris. So expect to see at least one Simpsonian performance when this hits theaters, no matter what the Smurfs look like.
Casting is still underway for other parts, but Mays will be pregnant, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Azaria's energy and acrobatic voice stylings should make him an easy fit for the Smurfs' nemesis, flesh and blood, CGI or whatever they choose for the character.
These casting details are distinctly more trustworthy than the suspicious CG Smurf still that floated out last year. The film will have energy, as anyone who watches "Glee" or caught NPH on the Oscars this year already knows. Just how well the Smurf village gets integrated with real-life surroundings will be something to watch out for, but a certain "Squeakquel" done in a similar fashion still managed to get audiences into its seats during "Avatar" season last year.
