We’ve seen veterans like Jeff Bridges, Christopher Walken and Burt Reynolds launch hugely-successful second acts in recent years, reminding fans that they’re talented folks who’ve survived decades in Hollywood and aren’t above laughing at themselves every now and then. But don’t be surprised if the next post-fame comeback is engineered by none other than… Crispin Glover?
A teen star turned blockbuster actor turned indie actor who has found himself at times ostracized by Hollywood, the 45-year-old recently celebrated the biggest opening of his career in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Having seen “Hot Tub Time Machine” recently, I can tell you that he steals every scene he’s in.
But that doesn’t mean he plans on giving up the eccentric, fiercely independent films he’s been making over the last few years.
“My next project is one I’m planning to do at my property in the Czech Republic that I bought six years ago,” revealed Glover, who has spent the last few years filming and touring in support of his surreal movies “What Is It?” and “It is Fine. Everything is Fine!” “There are horse stables next to this chateau that I bought that was built in the 1600s, and in those horse stables I’m making a small sound stage; it’s ready right now to start building sets.”
Once Glover’s soundstage is done, the actor plans on shooting a new film he’ll act in alongside a most unusual co-star. “I’m in the midst of writing a screenplay for myself and my father to act in together,” Glover explained. “He’s an actor. And he and I have never acted together.”
Although the film will follow multiple families and tap into themes of paternity, Crispin and his 77-year-old father Bruce Glover (“Chinatown”) will play the characters themselves. “We play a series of fathers and sons,” Crispin explained. “It’s not a time travel movie, but there are generational elements. On some level, you could almost say there are similarities in terms of psychological states while visiting people to perhaps both ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ and ‘Back to the Future.’ But it’s not a time travel movie.”
At the moment, Glover doesn’t have a title for the screenplay. But as his “mainstream-Hollywood” career shows signs of coming back strong, it sure is good to see that Crispin will continue directing the smaller, more personal films that obviously mean so much to him.
“At the right point I’ll say what the title and all of that is, but I’m still being very careful about how things are going to be on the set as I write the screenplay,” he explained. “Because I’m building the sets on my property, and I will be financing all of this myself. It’s less expensive for me, the more organized I am.”
What do you think of Crispin Glover’s unique career path? Is he primed to be the next great Hollywood comeback story?
