1. "Alice in Wonderland" ($62 million)
2. "Green Zone" ($14.5 million)
3. "She's Out of My League" ($9.6 million)
4. "Remember Me" ($8.3 million)
5. "Shutter Island" ($8.1 million)
Even with four new wide releases in theaters this weekend, director Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" proved its staying power by claiming the gold medal at this weekend's box office. Suffering a 46.6% drop from last weekend's $116.1 million intake, "Alice" still managed an impressive $62 million stateside result. Combined with foreign box office numbers, "Alice" has made $429.6 million worldwide in just two weeks.
Director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon's "Green Zone" opened in second place with $14.5 million. The Iraq War thriller cost a hefty $100 million to produce, so the meager debut isn't exactly a best case scenario for the "Bourne" collaborators or Universal Pictures.
Comedian Jay Baruchel's turn to leading man status in "She's Out of My League" was able to outmatch "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson's "Remember Me." The romantic comedy won third place with $9.6 million, while Pattinson's romantic drama earned $8.3 million.
"Shutter Island" continued its successful path by hanging in the top five for its third weekend in a row. Director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio's thriller managed $8.1 million by Sunday's end, bringing the Paramount film's domestic total to $108 million.
For the first time since its December debut, James Cameron's "Avatar" fell out of the top five this weekend. Seeing as how just about every single moviegoer in the world has already made the trip to Pandora, however, it's doubtful that anybody at Fox is mourning the film's $6.6 million seventh place finish.
