Marco. Polo. No, I'm not trying to start a game with you here — I'm just telling you the topic of the next adventure film from "I Am Legend" director Francis Lawrence and Warner Bros.
According to Variety, WB picked up a pitch from writing team Adam Cooper and Bill Collage for an untitled film based on the adventures of 13th century explorer Marco Polo with Lawrence currently attached to direct. The film is set up with Erwin Stoff at 3 Arts Entertainment.
While the film's title and story details are currently under wraps, screenwriters Cooper and Collage insist that the movie is not a biopic, but an epic fantasy-adventure.
"We see this as something that takes place in the Orient of our imagination amid the cultural clash of the East and the West," said Cooper, who co-wrote 2006's "Accepted" alongside Collage.
Although not a biopic, Cooper and Collage have plenty of history to play around with for the Lawrence-helmed project. Polo, a Venice merchant, sailed throughout Asia for over 20 years, serving alongside Kublai Khan of the Mongol empire. Adding a bit of fictional leeway to Polo's actual adventures sounds like a good recipe for a solid adventure flick, particularly with Lawrence at the helm.
The Marco Polo project marks Cooper and Collage's third consecutive reimagining of classic stories, the first two focusing on Moses and another that reinterprets Herman Melville's "Moby Dick."
