Now that 2009 and its many delicious film releases are behind us, it's time to focus on the year's best. It was a pretty great year for movies from where I'm sitting. There are three standout favorites I can name from 2009 -- "Avatar," "A Serious Man" and "The Hurt Locker" -- and they couldn't be more different from one another. All three are Best Picture nominees however, which means that one will rise above the rest after the votes have been counted.
All this week, MTV.com will be running category previews to hype you up for the Sunday awards ceremony. This morning brought the first, a look at the Best Supporting Actor nominees. As a supplement to these rundowns, we'll be running predictions here on the Movies Blog. Not that this category's winner is really in question.
The five candidates are Matt Damon for "Invictus," Woody Harrelson for "The Messenger," Christopher Plummer for "The Last Station," Stanley Tucci for "The Lovely Bones" and Christoph Waltz for "Inglourious Basterds." All of these guys are fine actors who turned in great performances for their respective roles. But only one can be winner, and the statue will undoubtedly go to Waltz this year.
In Nazi SS Colonel Hans Landa, Waltz does the unthinkable: he brings to life the best villain that director Quentin Tarantino has ever put on screen. The writing is there of course, but it would be nothing without the actor's stellar performance. He serves up this brilliant, calculating military man, all smiles and handshakes until he circles around to whatever dark truth he's attempting to shed light on.
The first scene in "Inglourious," when Landa shows up at a French farm in search of hidden Jews, is a Tarantino moment that rivals the likes of the 'Royale with cheese' chat in "Pulp Fiction" and the ear-cutting in "Reservoir Dogs." Waltz's transformation from amiable fact-checker to hard-edged executioner is both instantaneous and thoroughly believable. All due respect to the other nominees, but Waltz won't be going home empty-handed on Sunday night.
Tune in this Sunday for MTV's live Oscars coverage! The festivities kick off at 7pm with a live streaming red carpet show and a fashion-focused live blog on Hollywood Crush. Then head over here at 8pm when the awards show begins to follow our running commentary in MTV's Academy Awards live blog.
