FROM MTV.COM: Oscar campaigning took a dark turn earlier this week when it was revealed that "The Hurt Locker" producer Nicolas Chartier e-mailed a group of industry players in an appeal for Best Picture votes. And rather than touting the quality of the Kathryn Bigelow-directed, Oscar nomination-leading Iraq War story, Chartier based his plea on his film's indie roots, indirectly but quite obviously slamming "Avatar" in the process.

Chartier called for the e-mail's recipients to tell their "friends who vote for the Oscars," and to have them tell their friends, to support "The Hurt Locker" instead of "a $500M film," according to the Los Angeles Times. He went on to say that "we need independent movies to win," making no mention of Bigelow, star Jeremy Renner or any of the other people involved in making the film.

Following on the heels of the new "Alice in Wonderland" clip the hit the Internet earlier this week, we have three more to share with you. Each one highlights a different character. The Red Queen is first, and in the clip you get to hear her utter that iconic line, "Off with his head!"

I'm greatly encouraged by this clip and the two after the jump. As a fan of Lewis Carroll's classic story, I've been very much looking forward to seeing how Tim Burton spins this sequel (sorry, but that's what it is). I've also been a little worried, as is the case whenever a childhood favorite is in some way reinterpreted for modern audiences. But the whimsical characters on display here feel pulled straight out of Wonderland, as they should be. You'll find the other two clips after the jump. Read more...

DESCNearly 30 years have passed since "Tron" hit theaters, but the technology heavy story is keeping up with the times for its upcoming sequel, "Tron Legacy."

The "Tron" team has launched a viral campaign ala "The Dark Knight" to build up the hype and excitement for the December releasing science fiction movie. Visitors of a site called "Flynn Lives" were challenged yesterday to embark upon something of a scavenger hunt mission taking place in 25 cities across the world, including New York City, Paris, Sydney and Los Angeles. DESCBradley Cooper isn't one to run away from a bad night of drinking. In fact, the "A-Team" star is so eager to get back to the sauce that he's dropping out of a project in order to film a sequel to "The Hangover."

Entertainment Weekly reports that Cooper is walking away from "This Means War," a long-gestating spy comedy from 20th Century Fox, due to scheduling conflicts with "The Hangover 2." "Terminator Salvation" director McG is in negotiations to helm the spy movie with Reese Witherspoon set to star, but without Cooper, the film's fate is currently uncertain. Read more...

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Superman's next big-screen adventure has a new writer and working title, and they should both be familiar to comic book fans. According to online reports, "Batman Begins" co-writer David Goyer will pen the screenplay for a film titled "The Man Of Steel" that will see DC's iconic hero fly back into theaters.

UPDATE: AintItCoolNews reports that Goyer is not a lock to write "Man of Steel," according to Legendary Pictures founder Thomas Tull. At press time, reps for Goyer and Warner Bros. have not responded to requests for comment.

Variety reports that Goyer's script will involve significantly more action than 2006's "Superman Returns," and will feature the hero battling Lex Luthor and Brainiac. Neither "Superman Returns" actor Brandon Routh nor director Bryan Singer are expected to return for the film.

Earth to readers. I've got some really, really, really good news to share with you today. "Zoolander" is getting a sequel. Probably. "It's been too long" is an understatement.

The 2001 comedy starring Ben Stiller as a vain, exceedingly dim male model has long been talked about for a follow-up. Fans of the cult hit certainly want one, and everyone associated with the original has had to field questions about the possibility for close to a decade now. Will Ferrell, who played the villainous clothing designer Mugatu in the first movie, told MTV in early 2008 that there had been "a little talk" but the ideas were "just not crystallizing." We later heard more encouraging news from original writer John Hamburg, who said "I think someday we will make that movie." Stiller himself spoke out about a sequel as recently as May 2009, saying "I'd love to do 'Zoolander 2.'"

Now however, plans seem to finally be gelling. Read more...

DESCIt's a good time to be Mickey Rourke. He punched his way back into the mainstream with Marv in "Sin City" and blew away the art house crowd with his award-winning turn in "The Wrestler." He's set to kick the tar out of Robert Downey Jr. in "Iron Man 2" and he's currently in negotiations for a nice role in "Conan."

But the good fortune doesn't end there, as Deadline Hollywood reports that Rourke is negotiating for a role in "War of the Gods," the mythological war movie helmed by Tarsem ("The Fall") and starring Henry Cavill ("The Tudors") and Freida Pinto ("Slumdog Millionaire").

If cast, Rourke would play King Hyperion, the Greek ruler that goes to war against the gods. Read more...

There's a new trailer online today at MySpace for the "Nightmare on Elm Street" remake. No talking, just watch:

A Nightmare on Elm Street Trailer 2

Have to say, that is one badass trailer. There are money shots galore even as it keeps Freddy's (Jackie Earle Haley) bathed in shadow. Hopefully it stays that way until the movie hits theaters; the best kind of fear is that which grows out of being kept on the edge of your seat in anticipation of something scary.

There's also a new poster that debuted earlier this week, to go along with the trailer. Check it out after the jump. Read more...

Can a film be worse than the legendarily bad "Showgirls"? The answer to that question remains unclear, but a European director has submitted a possible answer with a very, very NSFW trailer for "Showgirls 2: The Return."

With no recognizable stars, repetitive background music and little discernible relationship to the first film, the trailer puts forth pornographic shock and awe to make its point (whatever point that may be).

Even more noticeably absent than Elizabeth Berkley? There's almost no dialogue in the trailer! This may be due to the fact that "Showgirls 2" was filmed in Germany and there's barely any English to speak of (pun intended, sorry), but who knows? Part of the unintended humor that drove the 1995 original to cult-classic status was the dialogue. Who can forget lines like, "I like nice t---, I always have, how about you?" and "Why did you stop hooking? You had your future pretty well mapped out for yourself."

DESCThe casting of Ian McShane as Blackbeard in Rob Marshall's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is easily one of the greatest movie news stories of the week. McShane is a powerful actor and his scenes opposite Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and the rest of the "Pirates" cast are sure to be a major draw of the film. On top of that, McShane is assuming an iconic role in Blackbeard, a fierce pirate with a lot of interest, name recognition and history – despite boasting a short and bloody lifespan.

While the actor is guaranteed to bring his own signature spin to the role, there are a few essential facts about Blackbeard that you might care to know before the fourth "Pirates" installment sails into theaters. Read more...
