The most exciting and most implausible news of this week centered on a meeting in Berlin between filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Lars von Trier about plans for some kind of remake of Scorsese's 1976 antihero classic, "Taxi Driver." Von Trier's people quickly called the rumor "rubbish," and now Scorsese has finally addressed the story, as well.

At a special Armani event tied to Scorsese's new thriller, "Shutter Island," the filmmaker told New York Magazine that he and Von Trier did indeed meet and "were talking, but not about 'Taxi Driver.'" Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: The rabid fans with their cell phone cams and ear-splitting screams. The frenzy over a rumored run-in with a moving taxi cab. The daily perils and pleasures of working in the Big Apple. As all this by-now-familiar madness surrounded Robert Pattinson on the New York City set of "Remember Me" last year, co-star Pierce Brosnan couldn't help but want to shield his fellow actor.

"I play his dad and there's a part of you, as a dad — you feel protective toward the fellow," Brosnan told MTV News.

One of the pleasant surprises with this year's Oscar nominations is recognition of the original screenplay for "The Messenger." What's not surprising is that now the film's co-writer and director, Oren Moverman, is being wooed for big projects, such as Universal's Kurt Cobain biopic. According to Risky Biz Blog Moverman has been hired to pen a new draft of the adaptation, partially based on the 2001 book "Heavier Than Heaven," and also to direct the film, too.

This will be Moverman's second film as a director. He has some experience with scripting biopics, however, having been Todd Haynes' co-writer on the Bob Dylan film "I'm Not There." And if the film was to deal with any of the conspiracy theories, or at least to speculate on the mystery of Cobain's 1994 death, perhaps Moverman's work on Ira Sachs' Hitchcockian crime drama "Married Life" would also seem like groundwork. But given that Courtney Love and her lawyer are executive producers on this, any ambiguity about her late husband's suicide is unlikely. Read More...

There's no way around it. "Avatar" is going to get multiple home video releases. It's just a fact. Big movies typically get a barebones release followed by a special edition and sometimes even another special edition, especially if there's a director's cut or some holiday to peg it to. "Avatar" adds a new wrinkle thanks to the 3-D angle and the still-new 3-D home display technologies. So get used to the idea now: if you're an "Avatar" junkie, you're going to be buying it more than once and probably more than twice.

We've already heard from News Corp. top dog Rupert Murdoch that an "Avatar" DVD -- barebones, of course -- will hopefully arrive in stores before June 30, with a special edition and/or 3-D release to follow sometime after that. When MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke with director James Cameron yesterday, the first question he had was "When?"

"It exists! It's coming!" he said of the for-home 3-D technology, explaining that we'll start to see them as soon as next month, with more coming before the end of 2010. "By third and fourth quarter of this year, you can get a 3-D set if you want to." Read More...

It is my opinion that the single-best male performance of last year belongs to Christoph Waltz, the disarmingly evil Nazi "Jew Hunter" in Quentin Tarantino's World War II-set fairy tale, "Inglourious Basterds." Some credit goes to the filmmaking of course, but Waltz delivers an unforgettable performance as one of the great villains of our time, a man who is at once thoroughly likable and unapologetically ruthless.

Late last month we reported that "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson was up for a starring role in an upcoming adaptation of Sara Gruen's best-selling novel "Water for Elephants." He was later confirmed, along with fellow star Reese Witherspoon. Now there's news that Waltz will possibly join the growing cast... as the villain! Read More...

Yesterday, I appealed to Hollywood for a moratorium on all reboots, at least until Lent ends on Easter Sunday. That request has been indirectly addressed, and it's quite the bummer.

Despite there being a still-ongoing series of direct-to-video releases in the franchise, the word is that Universal is interested in rebooting "American Pie." Yeah, the movie where Jason Biggs does dirty things to a home-cooked baked good. The word comes from the Los Angeles Times, which reports that the "development community" is referring to the still-gestating plan as "American Pie 4," implying that the DTV releases will be ignored and that the series' coming return will in some way follow the events of the 2003 theatrical release, "American Wedding." FROM MTV.COM: Another month, another plagiarism claim. The target this time is "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling, whose name has been added as a defendant to a lawsuit filed in June against Bloomsbury Publishing PLC by the estate of the late Adrian Jacobs. According to USA Today, the suit alleges that "Potter" book four, 2000's "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," borrowed liberally from Jacobs' 1987 book "The Adventures of Willy the Wizard — No. 1 Livid Land" as well as taking other ideas from the "Willy the Wizard" series.

Rowling, no stranger to copyright infringement proceedings, was quick to speak up in her own defense. "I am saddened that yet another claim has been made that I have taken material from another source to write Harry," she said. "The fact is I had never heard of the author or the book before the first accusation by those connected to the author's estate in 2004; I have certainly never read the book."

It's been hard to avoid all the "Terminator" news lately. It's also been hard to keep up with the many twists and turns this developing story has taken. The latest twist came yesterday, when it was revealed that Sony and Lionsgate -- the studios that had been working with new rights-holder Pacificor -- no longer have exclusivity in pitching what to do with the franchise next. This development came shortly after last week's news that "Terminator" and "Terminator 2" writer William Wisher had developed ideas for fifth and sixth movies in the series.

So when James Cameron, the franchise's creator, stopped by the newsroom yesterday, MTV's Josh Horowitz seized the opportunity to ask the man how he feels about Wisher's treatment and the ongoing saga in general.

"I heard something about that, but I haven't talked to [Wisher] about it," Cameron said. "But that's cool." Read More...

"The Hurt Locker" is unquestionably one of the best films of 2009, as evidenced by the "Avatar"-tying nine Oscar nominations it received. What this means is that star Jeremy Renner, a Best Actor contender, is burning hot right now. And so a lot of people are wondering what will be next for him.

A couple of hints surfaced today in a New York Times article which takes a general look at some of the nominees and what's coming up for them. It sounds like we'll next see Renner in "The Raven," for which Ewan McGregor is in talks to co-star. You might remember "The Raven" from our own chats with director James McTeigue; he told us last August that he was "close" to casting someone for the starring role of Edgar Allen Poe. Read More...

Has it become cool to like Jar Jar Binks yet? Has enough time passed? Enough hate dispensed? We can all look back at that idiotic doofus sidekick now and have a laugh now, right? No? Didn't think so.

Well I for one have always enjoyed Jar Jar. From his borderline racism to his seeming to have the IQ of a celery stalk, there's just something special about that guy. And the voice. Oh the voice. For years you see I've had a secret talent, a completely useless one like the best talents. I can do a pretty awesome Jar Jar voice. I've interviewed Ewan McGregor a few times over the years but I never had the courage/bad judgment to demonstrate my ability for him. Until the other day... when I threw caution to the wind. Watch and recoil as Ewan comes face to face with Jar Jar Binks one more time.
