1. "Shutter Island" ($40.2 million)
2. "Valentine's Day" ($17.2 million)
3. "Avatar" ($16.1 million)
4. "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" ($15.3 million)
5. "The Wolfman" ($9.8 million)
This weekend, the romance of "Valentine's Day" succumbed to the horror of "Shutter Island," Paramount's newest thriller from director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio. "Shutter Island" easily took the box office's first place prize with a $40.2 million haul, but DiCaprio and Scorsese didn't just top the other box office competitors — they also topped themselves.
Based on the novel by "Mystic River" author Dennis Lehane, "Shutter Island" marked the best weekend performance ever for both DiCaprio and Scorsese. The pair had most recently collaborated on "The Departed," the 2006 Oscar winner that provided Scorsese's best opening weekend at $26.9 million — a record now defeated by "Shutter Island." DiCaprio's previous $30.1 million record from "Catch Me If You Can" was also outmatched by the new thriller.
Although "Valentine's Day" didn't woo enough viewers for a second gold medal, the romantic comedy managed a respectable second place worth $17.2 million. Having already earned $35 million past its production budget in domestic ticket sales alone, there's no reason for Warner Bros. and the creative forces behind "Valentine's Day" to feel any heartbreak.
The same can't be said for last week's newcomers "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" and "The Wolfman," however, as both movies fell to the ever reliable might of "Avatar." James Cameron's science fiction epic climbed back up from last weekend's fourth place slot to third place by Sunday's end, leaving "Percy" and "Wolfman" to nurse their wounds in the top five's bottom two positions.
