The exit of David Goyer as "FlashForward"'s showrunner disappointed many fans of the ABC science fiction series, myself included. But even more worrisome was the fact that there wasn't an immediate replacement mentioned, leaving the show's steering wheel completely unmanned.
Now, less than a week since the initial announcement, a replacement has finally been revealed. Three replacements, actually. According to Variety, the trio of Jessika Borsiczky, Lisa Zwerling and Tim Lea have been named as executive producers and showrunners of "FlashForward," assumedly putting the series back on track.
Scoping out the IMDb pages of the new showrunners doesn't provide much optimism — their collective television credits are few — but at least Zwerling and Borsiczky have already been in the "FlashForward" mix for quite a while, so the new showrunners have a good amount of familiarity with the characters and story. I'm certainly willing to give them a shot.
But even after replacing Goyer, the problems for "FlashForward" aren't necessarily over. Variety notes that ABC has reduced its order on the series from 23 episodes down to 22. Back in October, ABC increased its order count to 25 total episodes. They've shaved that order down by three since then. Twenty-two episodes is still a lot of story for a first season, but as filming is already deep into the final episodes of the year, the episode reduction could result in some rushed pacing as "FlashForward" speeds towards its intended finish without the extra hour.
It's great that the series has new showrunners, but to announce an episode reduction in the same breath? It's not exactly the greatest sign of confidence in "FlashForward."
