Is Jigsaw finally going to die? I mean, really really die? No more flashbacks, no more traps, no more gangly bear trap masks? Well, probably not, but the screenwriter behind the upcoming "Saw VII" seems to think that the end of the franchise is nigh.
Latino Review transcribed an interview between screenwriter Patrick Melton and radio station Demon FM where the writer discussed the possibility that "Saw VII" — currently being called "Saw: Endgame" — could be the final chapter of the horror franchise.
"I think it's going to end with Saw VII," said Melton. "I have a very strong feeling its going to end with Saw VII. That's something we're debating now."
"You saw in previous interviews or discussions where we thought Saw VIII would be the last one where we had the first trilogy and the second trilogy and then sort of a grand finale wrapped up in two films," he continued. "But frankly because Saw VI hasn't performed as well as we anticipated, the idea is well why make two movies when we can make one really excellent movie that wraps up as best we can? And it's going to be in 3-D which sort of adds to the spectacle."
Melton admitted that this isn't an end-all be-all state of affairs regarding the "Saw" property. It's entirely possible that the movies will continue, but in his own opinion, the upcoming seventh installment should be the finale.
"If you had to ask me, I don't own the franchise, nor do I run the studio, but I have a feeling, a strong feeling that it's going to be 'Saw VII' which will be also known as 'Endgame,'" he said. "And nothing's official yet, but that's where we're hoping things will go."
I love Tobin Bell so I'm always game for seeing more work from the actor — no matter how deeply involved he's been in the "Saw" franchise as late — but really, I would not mind one bit seeing this property take a rest. Not necessarily go away for good, but just give it a bit of a breather. But unless "Saw VII" is a real flop, I'm not taking the bet that this franchise is on the verge of extinction. The films are too cheap to make and bring in too much money to go away right now, even if it is the best creative decision available.
