There's some big event on TV this Sunday. A ton of shiny, new movie trailers are going to premiere! I think there's a football game going on too, but who cares about that?
As is the case every year, this year's Super Bowl will bring the usual helping of commercials and trailers that probably cost more to secure airtime for than they did to produce. And while most of the commercials aren't really going to drive you movies fans into a frenzy, some of the trailer premieres certainly will. You'll get glimpses of some of the biggest movies this year. I've tried to compile a complete list for you based on reports floating around the Internet, though I wouldn't be surprised if a few others sneak in there as well. We have no idea if this list is 100% accurate; hopefully it's wrong and there are more. One thing is certain though: we'll know on Sunday.
For Universal, the obvious one is "The Wolfman." The creature feature remake comes out next week and what better way to psych people up than with a terrifying Super Bowl ad? There will also be a spot for "Robin Hood," the Russell Crowe-starring retelling of the classic tale, directed by Ridley Scott. That one hits theaters in May. Rounding out the Universal movie trailers is one for "Despicable Me," a 3-D CG-animated flick about super villains. Also, it's not technically a movie, but Universal will air a trailer for the upcoming "Harry Potter"-themed addition to the studio's theme park.
Paramount also has a soon-to-arrive movie to pimp, the Martin Scorsese-directed adaptation of "Shutter Island." Solid book, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it works as a movie. That one arrives on February 19. You'll also be able to check out a new trailer for "The Last Airbender," director M. Night Shyamalan's feature adaptation of the popular anime series. And of course, what would a Super Bowl be without some superheroes-- look for a glimpse of "Iron Man 2," which really can't arrive soon enough (May 7).
Disney will also have a presence during Sunday's commercial breaks, with looks at three of the most highly anticipated movies this year. "Alice in Wonderland" will usurp "Avatar" from 3-D screens on March 5, but you'll get a peek at it this Sunday. You'll also get a glimpse of two monster summer releases, the video game adaptation "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" and "Toy Story 3."
Big thanks to the good people at Associated Content for helping us fill out our list. Some of these were big surprises!
Now... anyone have any information on super-secret "Inception" or "Tron Legacy" spots? Anyone? No?
