Weird. Here I am, a member of the MTV Movies blog team, and I'm reporting on the news that HBO intends to launch a new series... about film blogging. I don't have to watch it. I live it.
Kidding aside, this is something that's happening. The series, called "Tilda," is being developed by "Dreamgirls" and "Kinsey" director Bill Condon and Cynthia Mort, who developed the HBO series "Tell Me You Love Me," The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The show will focus on a female online entertainment journalist with "a no-holds-barred style." The description has drawn immediate comparisons to noted real-life reporters Nikki Finke, Anne Thompson and Sharon Waxman.
Condon has plenty of writing experience, having won an Oscar for his work on "Gods and Monsters," but "Tilda" marks his series writing debut. He will executive produce with Mort and, should the series get a pilot, he's attached to direct it.
As a longtime fan of HBO's original programming, I'm glad to see so many upcoming series' in development. In addition to "Tilda," there's "Luck," a horse-racing drama from "Deadwood" creator David Milch and "Public Enemies" director Michael Mann; "Emergency Sex," starring and produced by Maria Bello, with writer/producer Simon Beaufoy and producer Russell Crowe; a crime drama produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron; and a comedy series starring Zooey Deschanel.
That's not even mentioning the highly anticipated series' that are definitely launching this year. Producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg will head back to World War II in March, following up their acclaimed "Band of Brothers" miniseries with "The Pacific." "The Wire" creator David Simon launches his next series shortly afterwards; "Treme" will focus on the post-Katrina music community in New Orleans. And later in the year the cable network will launch "Boardwalk Empire," an Atlantic City-centered series produced by Martin Scorsese and "Sopranos" veteran Terence Winter.
What are some of your favorite HBO series'? Which of the upcoming series' are you looking forward to? Are you interested in following the ongoing story of a Hollywood film blogger?
