Italian filmmaker Gabriele Muccino, best known in the U.S. for his Will Smith collaborations "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "Seven Pounds," is in talks to direct Keanu Reeves next in the sci-fi flick "Passengers," according to Variety. Reeves has been involved with the project at least since 2007, when the film's script popped up on the annual Black List of greatest unproduced screenplays.

Written by John Spaihts, who is also penning Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel (partly thanks to Reeves), "Passengers" is a love story set on a spaceship. It sounds more frightening than romantic however. Reeves plays a man accidentally awakened too early from hibernation during a centuries-long flight to a distant planet. So rather than wait around to die while the rest of the crew sleeps, he wakes up a female passenger in order to have company. Read More...

FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: We average American audiences still have another two months to wait until "The Runaways" hits theaters, but those lucky enough to have attended Sundance this past week already had their first look during the film's premiere. Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning chatted with MTV about how they felt going into the film.

"I'm so glad that we can let other people know [about the story]. I had never even heard of the story, and a lot of young people hadn't," Kristen said about how she was happy she joined the film.

As for whether they found any aspect of the film particularly daunting, Dakota seemed to have taken it all in stride. "I wasn't dreading anything, actually. I was just really excited to actually do it. It's one of those things, like, you don't know how it's going to feel until you're actually there. And for me, 'Cherry Bomb' was really what kind of summed the experience up for me," Dakota said.

One of the very first movies George Lucas worked on was a musical: Francis Ford Coppola's "Finian's Rainbow." Now, more than 50 years later, the "Star Wars" mastermind is returning to the genre for an all-CG film he's producing. The untitled animated feature was scripted by David Berenbaum ("The Spiderwick Chronicles") and will be directed by Kevin Munroe ("TMNT"). According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, all that is really known about the plot of this top-secret project is that it will involve... fairies.

It's not even known if Lucas came up with the story, as he typically does for his productions. Of course, he has some experience with the little winged creatures. He wrote and produced "Willow," in which there's a scene featuring a bunch of small glowing fairies and one large fairy queen. Just imagine if this were a spin-off of that movie focused on Cherlindrea and her tiny subjects. No, there's not much likelihood of that happening. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: If there's one thing movie fans have read repeatedly over the past 12 years, it's that no film could ever approach the box-office numbers of "Titanic." Now, "Avatar" has pulled off the impossible and taken the crown, with James Cameron overtaking, well, James Cameron, grossing $1.858 billion worldwide. But is the movie really #1?

" 'Avatar' actually has quite a long ways to go in terms of actual tickets sold," explained Jeff Bock, box-office analyst at Exhibitor Relations, a company that monitors theatrical receipts and analysis. "Right now, with adjusted grosses considered, 'Avatar' would be at #25 domestically."

Call it "a live-action 'Call of Duty.'" Call it "fast, smart, hard." Call it a remake, a reimagining, whatever. The new "Red Dawn" is high on our list of action flicks that have us pumped about the 2010 cinema schedule. And while the updated version will make some key changes to the 1984 flick's storyline, the original's red, white and blue center will stay just the same.

"It's definitely a new interpretation," star Josh Hutcherson told MTV News while promoting "The Kids Are All Right" at Sundance. "We've changed quite a bit of the story, but the heart of the story is there. The American, patriotic feel of the original, rising up against the invaders, is still definitely there. The Chinese are invading now, so we're switching that up just to stay with the times a little bit." Read More...

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Over the last few months, we've heard from "Kick-Ass" cast mates Chloe Moretz, Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Clark Duke and Mark Strong, but one person who we've heard very little from is Kick-Ass himself, Aaron Johnson.

In the film, Johnson plays high-schooler Dave Lizewski, a teenage comics fan who decides to try his hand at being a costumed vigilante, only to face some harsh realities about fighting crime. MTV News caught up with Johnson at the Sundance Film Festival to ask him about the film — specifically, whether he's spoken to director Matthew Vaughn or "Kick-Ass" comic co-creator Mark Millar about their plans for a sequel.

"We'll see, we'll see," said Johnson. "It would be great to do a sequel."

One of the Sundance titles that's been gathering a lot of buzz is "HIGH School." As you might have deduced from the title's formatting, it is best described as a stoner comedy. The story follows a promising young student and potential MIT scholarship recipient who experiments with marijuana for the first time... the day before a school-wide drug testing program is instituted. In order to save his future, the enterprising lad comes up with a plan to drug the entire school with pot brownies sold at a bake sale.

Stars Michael Chiklis and Colin Hanks, who play the school principal and vice principal, respectively, stopped by to chat during their Sundance meanderings. MTV's Eric Ditzian just had to ask the two about past fictional school authority figures and what their own performances bring to this rich lexicon.

"The pantheon of big screen principals?" Chiklis asked with a laugh. "I think you're going straight to the top on this one, I'm going to be quite honest with you," Hanks replied. The two then proceeded to run through a laundry list of character traits that set the "HIGH School" principal apart from his predecessors. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Once upon a time, two late-night legends butted heads in a battle over who would host "The Tonight Show," giving birth to a venomous based-on-fact book and movie called "The Late Shift." More than a decade later, Jay Leno is caught up in more high-profile hijinks, this time with Conan O'Brien — and if another movie is made depicting the late-night drama, Coco might have found the thespian to portray him ... in Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton?

When O'Brien closed out his all-too-brief "Tonight Show" hosting duties last week, he requested during Friday's final episode that if a "Late Shift"-like movie is made of the recent battle between himself, NBC and Jay Leno, he would "like to be played by Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton." As side-by-side photos of the red-headed actress and O'Brien appeared onscreen, the joke got some of the evening's biggest laughs.

"Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich loves Twitter. And he especially loves the twitpic feature, as it allows him to share insider views of the happenings at Pixar with loyal fans everywhere. There's some especially exciting stuff going on there right now too. "Toy Story 3" is out this summer, and the team there is now at the point of bringing in the movie's voice cast to record their lines.

Last week, Unkrich shared a glimpse of the recording session with Tom Hanks, who stars as cowboy doll Woody. Yesterday, he shared a bunch more. Timothy Dalton. Tim Allen. And legendary comedian Don Rickles. I picked just one for today's Daily TwitPic, and Rickles is it. Check it out after the jump. Read More...

Last summer we heard from Scorpion actor Chris Casamassa that another return to video game adaptation "Mortal Kombat" was being planned. At the time -- early July -- he said that the plan was to start shooting in September. We reached out to Warner Bros for confirmation, and never heard back.

It seems that the September shoot Casamassa referenced didn't come to pass. In fact, if the latest news is accurate, he might not even be involved in the next "Mortal Kombat." WB is apparently interested in rebooting the franchise, and they're talking to Oren Uziel about writing it, Bloody-Disgusting reports. Uziel doesn't have a feature credit yet, but his script for "Shimmer Lake" was marked as one of last year's Black List titles, a round-up of the most bafflingly unproduced pitches of the year.
