The 2010 Sundance Film Festival kicked off on a blustery Thursday evening in Park City as James Franco and Jon Hamm opened the ten-day movie extravaganza with the world premiere of "Howl."
The biopic weaves together various periods in the life of beat poet Allen Ginsberg (Franco) as he struggles to find his artistic voice while American counterculture blossoms around him and then must defend that voice when the law seeks to stifle it. Hamm plays a lawyer who represents Ginsberg during the trial to suppress the genre-busting, sexually-provocative epic poem that gives the film its title. Mixing archival footage and animation with the actors' performances, it is a film about one of the great iconoclasts of the 20th Century.
And when MTV News had a chance to talk with Hamm on the "Howl" red carpet, the actor shared his thoughts on which stars might become the enduring iconoclasts of the new century. Read more...

The beats are alive and well thanks to a soaring performance by James Franco in the Sundance opener, "Howl." Debuting to a predictably packed house at the Eccles theater in Park City, writer/directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman unveiled their ode to the late Allen Ginsberg in a 90-minute mash-up of black and white, color, cartoon, and archival footage.
While not a standard issue biopic, "Howl" ably traverses some of the key points in the poet's life--namely the 1957 obscenity trial surrounding his most famous work. Zigzagging through time, the film is essentially narrated by Ginsberg himself through recreations of interviews, court transcripts, and most notably his powerful reading of "Howl." Read more...

Tom Hanks has been taking his time between tweets since he first signed up for a Twitter account a few weeks ago. Stepping into the studio to record some lines for "Toy Story 3" motivated him to start getting a little more hands-on with it, though, and director Lee Unkrich posted a picture to document the occasion.
Elsewhere in Twitter-Wood, the CoCo tweets are still legion, and Brian Posehn noted the appearance of Conan's masturbating bear last night, which got him feeling all emotional. Click on past the jump for all of those tweets, along with Edgar Wright's run-in with Sigourney Weaver, Ice-T's photo-op with Jamie Kennedy and Arnold Schwarzenegger's face-to-face sit-down with Nancy Pelosi. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter-Wood recap for January 21, 2010. Read more...

At the Critics' Choice Awards last week, MTV's Josh Horowitz scored a few moments on the red carpet with "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Lord and Miller are set to next tackle "21 Jump Street," a contemporary adaptation of the late-'80s/early-'90s TV series about a group of undercover cops tasked with infiltrating a high school.
Even if you don't remember the show, there's one important fact you should know about it: "21 Jump Street" starred a (very) young Johnny Depp, and was responsible for his early fame. And since Depp has previously expressed interest to us in having a cameo in the coming adaptation, Josh had to follow up on it with the two directors.
"He has not seen the script yet, but we're very open to his participation," Lord said, his grin widening. "The biggest movie star in the world, we're totally open to him being in the movie. Yeah, twist our arm," he joked. Read more...

In a few weeks, on February 12, Joe Johnston's long-awaited revival of classic creature feature "The Wolfman" finally hits theaters. The trailers have shown some pretty raw imagery-- enough for us to know that this is not a movie for kids. It's apparently not for star Emily Blunt either, as she told MTV's Josh Horowitz on the red carpet at last week's Critics' Choice Awards.
"It's very scary," she said. "I almost threw up a few times when i was watching it." Sounds like fun, right? Josh, hearing this, had a sudden epiphany. "That should be on the poster," he exclaimed. Read more...

Our "10 in '10" week of exclusive interviews with the hottest stars to watch for this year continues with Jesse Eisenberg. The "Adventureland" and "Zombieland" star will soon be seen starring with Justin Timberlake in "The Social Network," a David Fincher-directed telling of how social networking giant Facebook came to be.
In the film, Eisenberg will star as Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. The story is adapted from the book "The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal." It's a long title, but it's one that makes some alluring promises. Eisenberg delved into some of the details on his starring role as well as some of the other balls that are in play for him in the coming months and years. Read more...

Today I had the privilege of speaking with BioWare's Casey Hudson, project director on "Mass Effect 2," which hits stores next week. While the interview was mostly focused on the coming game's release, we also touched on what the plans are moving forward. On the game side of things, it's already well-known: next week's sequel is the second in a planned trilogy, telling the story of the human hero Commander Shepard and his efforts to save the galaxy from a malevolent force.
As anyone who's played the first game knows, the universe in "Mass Effect" is an extremely well-developed one, a setting ripe for multimedia exploitation. There are already books and a Dark Horse comic book line. Since movies are my beat, I had to ask Hudson if there are any plans to bring BioWare's unique sci-fi universe to screens large or small. This year it is becoming more and more bearable for those of us movie fans unable to attend the Sundance Film Festival. Earlier this month, Rainbow Media announced that its Sundance Selects video-on-demand cable channel would be premiering three new titles from the 2010 festival while these films were simultaneously debuting in Park City, Utah. Now YouTube has revealed similarly good news: the online streaming video site will begin offering selections from the festival to rent through your Google account.
YouTube's Sundance rentals, which will only be available through the duration of this year's fest -- starting tomorrow and running through January 31 -- include two of last year's screenings (the terrific documentary "The Cove" and the acclaimed indie drama "Children of Invention") and three new films that are playing at the 2010 festival ("Bass Ackwards," "Homewrecker" and "One Too Many Mornings"). The YouTube Blog has trailers for each of these films, as well as instructions on how to rent them if you're interested. Read more...
