Starting tomorrow, Mel Gibson fans will get to see the "Lethal Weapon" star act like a cop again in the thriller "Edge of Darkness." There are no plans for Riggs and Murtaugh to team up anytime soon (as far as we know), but we learn today that Gibson will soon pal around in a gun-toting, crime-fighting duo again. That's a good thing, right?
While we won't be seeing Danny Glover forming the other half of that duo -- remember... he's too old for this s--t -- the classic action/comedy cop series will still get a reunion of sorts. "Lethal Weapon" writer Shane Black will direct Gibson in "Cold Warrior," Variety reports. This will be Black's sophomore effort as a director, following up 2005's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."
The story, from a script by newcomer Chuck Mondry, follows a retired Cold War-era spy who answers the call once again, in the name of disrupting Russian plans to commit terrorist acts on American soil. If that sounds familiar, it's because "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" served up a similar storyline. Hopefully the U.S. spies in "Cold Warrior" won't meet the same fate as the CIA agent in that game. Gibson will play the called-out-of-retirement spy and an unnamed younger actor will play his partner.
This is good news, I think. I'm sort of looking forward to "Edge of Darkness" this weekend, seeing Gibson step in front of the camera as a do-gooder once again. And him teaming with Black for what amounts to some buddy cop action -- buddy agent action, if you want to be a jerk about it -- is great. Here's hoping that Mondry's script captures the same sense of fun that marks Black's other films, particular the "Lethal Weapon" series and "The Last Boy Scout."
Also, it's a great day when a "Last Boy Scout" reference can make its way onto the blog. That is all.
Are you seeing "Edge of Darkness" this weekend? Are you a bigger fan of Gibson the actor or Gibson the filmmaker? What do you make of "Cold Warrior"?
