Many characters have come and gone through the halls of "Lost," some with better outcomes than others. Some have lived, some have died, others have simply gone their separate ways. But there are still an unlucky few — fifteen of them, to be exact — who remain on the Island and who will undoubtedly have an enormous impact upon the show's ultimate endgame when the final season premieres on February 2, 2010.
After the jump, we've got the rundown on the final season's fifteen series regulars. Stay tuned to MTV for the rest of this week and into the season premiere, as we'll be running a series of features pegged directly to the show's trademark number sequence: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. Needless to say, spoilers for season five and earlier lie ahead.
1. BENJAMIN LINUS
Played By: Michael Emerson
Occupation: Former Leader of the Others
First Appearance: Caught in a net by Danielle Rousseau and handed over to the castaways for interrogation. (Season Two, "One of Them")
Last Appearance: Killed Jacob at the behest of a man he believed to be John Locke. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Ben's lying ways make him a difficult man to trust, but if the heroes of "Lost" want to stand a chance at survival, they'll need to learn how to put some faith in him.
Will He Survive: After everything he's done, he'll probably wind up in the DHARMA ditch.
2. CLAIRE LITTLETON
Played By: Emilie de Ravin
Occupation: Single Mother
First Appearance: Very pregnant and very overwhelmed by the fiery wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815, she ultimately needs to be saved by Dr. Jack Shephard. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Hanging out with her dead father Christian in a murky cabin that may or may not belong to Jacob. (Season Four, "Cabin Fever")
One Sentence Prediction: Claire's lengthy absence from "Lost" makes it hard to predict exactly how she'll factor into the show's endgame, but her status as Aaron's mother makes it a certainty that her role is an important one.
Will She Survive: If she's not dead already, I think she'll be okay.
3. FRANK LAPIDUS
Played By: Jeff Fahey
Occupation: Airline Pilot
First Appearance: Attempting to land a helicopter filled with himself, Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume and Charlotte Lewis on the Island in the middle of a horrific rainstorm. (Season Four, "Confirmed Dead")
Last Appearance: Hanging out with Ilana and her cronies outside of the Four-Toed Statue, wondering exactly what the hell he's a "candidate" for. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Frank provides much needed comic relief and skepticism, and with the possibility of being a "candidate" for something, there might just be more than meets the eye to the grouchy pilot.
Will He Survive: He's certainly expendable compared to other cast members, but I'd like to see him have a happy ending.
4. HUGO "HURLEY" REYES
Played By: Jorge Garcia
Occupation: Multi-Millionaire
First Appearance: Looking after a resuscitated Claire on Jack's request and nearly getting squashed by a piece of falling airplane wreckage. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Possibly blowing up outside of the in-progress Swan Station in 1977. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Like Frank, his comedic sensibilities will hopefully balance the final season's more dramatic tone, and his possession of Jacob's mysterious guitar case is sure to come into play somehow.
Will He Survive: There's no way he'll die... but then again, I said the exact same thing about Charlie after Ethan left him hanging from a tree in the first season.
5. ILANA
Played By: Zuleikha Robinson
Occupation: Bounty Hunter
First Appearance: Escorting a handcuffed Sayid Jarrah onto Ajira Airways Flight 316. (Season Five, "316")
Last Appearance: Revealing to everybody outside of the temple that John Locke is still very, very dead. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Little is known about Ilana, but the fact that Jacob himself visited her while she was hospitalized indicates that she has a significant role in the upcoming war of good versus evil.
Will She Survive: War brings casualties, so nah.
6. JACK SHEPHARD
Played By: Matthew Fox
Occupation: Spinal Surgeon
First Appearance: Waking up in the middle of the jungle and consequently rescuing as many people as he can from the aftermath of Flight 815's crash. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Trying to set off a hydrogen bomb in the middle of the Swan Station in an effort to reboot time. Crazy, I know. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: After years of fluctuating between capable leader and extraordinary jerk, it's time for Jack to put up or shut up when it comes to leading the way in the final episodes of "Lost."
Will He Survive: Even if he does survive, Jack has a long, long road to travel before finding a truly happy ending.
7. JAMES "SAWYER" FORD
Played By: Josh Holloway
Occupation: Confidence Man
First Appearance: Smoking a cigarette and quietly studying the burning wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Mourning the apparent demise of Juliet Burke, his girlfriend of three years and closest ally. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: From isolating loser to fearless leader, Sawyer's arc has been the exact reverse of Jack's, but the death of Juliet could stifle all of the progress he's made thus far.
Will He Survive: I don't think the writers of "Lost" could pass up the opportunity to give Sawyer an amazing final line of dialogue before an epic death scene.
8. JIN-SOO KWON
Played By: Daniel Dae Kim
Occupation: Guy Who Does Whatever Mr. Paik Tells Him To Do
First Appearance: Screaming out in search of his wife Sun during the aftermath of Oceanic Flight 815's crash. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Praying like hell that Jack's crazy plan to blow up the Island results in his reunion with Sun. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: He'll reunite with Sun and live long enough to see his daughter Ji-Yeon at some point, if only because any other outcome would be too cruel for words.
Will He Survive: I think so. Fingers crossed.
9. JOHN LOCKE
Played By: Terry O'Quinn
Occupation: Regional Collections Supervisor of a Cardboard Manufacturing Company
First Appearance: Lying backside in the midst of the plane wreck and wiggling his toes for the first time in four years. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Rolling out of a coffin and onto a sandy beach, proving to surrounding witnesses that he's truly gone. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Even in death, I would be astonished if John Locke didn't have an extraordinary role to play in the show's endgame, even if it's not quite as glamorous as the boar hunter would have hoped for himself.
Will He Survive: Well... uh... spoiler alert?
10. KATE AUSTEN
Played By: Evangeline Lilly
Occupation: Professional Fugitive
First Appearance: Begrudgingly stitching up a wound in Jack's back, having just ditched her handcuffs somewhere in the jungle. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Doing her best to pull Sawyer away from the gaping hole that Juliet had just fatally plummeted into. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Aside from making a romantic decision between Jack and Sawyer that's likely to piss off a whole bunch of fans, her role as Aaron's surrogate mother should have some importance in the final season.
Will She Survive: It's hard to imagine Kate dying, but her death towards the series' conclusion would have a tremendously interesting impact on Jack, Sawyer and several other heroes.
11. MILES STRAUME
Played By: Ken Leung
Occupation: Ghost Whisperer
First Appearance: Waiting to parachute out of Frank's helicopter with the express purpose of capturing Benjamin Linus on behalf of Charles Widmore. (Season Four, "Confirmed Dead")
Last Appearance: Rescuing DHARMA scientist Pierre Change — his father, funnily enough — from the site of the Swan Station before the hydrogen bomb's impending detonation. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Miles can speak with the dead, and considering how many dead people there are on the Island that could yield important answers, it's likely that this skill is going to pay off in a big way.
Will He Survive: The irony of the man who talks to dead people joining the ever-growing graveyard of "Lost" is too rich to not come true.
12. RICHARD ALPERT
Played By: Nestor Carbonell
Occupation: Eternally Young Eyeliner Guy
First Appearance: Attempting to get Doctor Juliet Burke to join Mittelos Bioscience, a cover organization that the Others use to recruit persons of interest. (Season Three, "Not in Portland")
Last Appearance: Realizing the horrible truth that the man he believed to be John Locke is someone very, very different. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: If we don't learn a great deal more about Richard's agelessness and his connections to the Island's mythology, heads are sure to roll.
Will He Survive: He's made it this far without aging a day — what's one more season?
13. SAYID JARRAH
Played By: Naveen Andrews
Occupation: Torturer, Assassin and All-Around Badass
First Appearance: Graciously asking Charlie Pace to assist him in finding fire wood for a signal fire. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Clutching his bleeding abdomen, a wound given to him by Roger Linus after Sayid shot his son in cold blood. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: The gaping hole in Sayid's torso indicates that his days on "Lost" are numbered, but the tortured torturer could still kick a butt or two before he himself kicks the bucket.
Will He Survive: Not a chance.
14. SUN-HWA KWON
Played By: Yunjin Kim
Occupation: Managing Director of Paik Industries
First Appearance: Listening to Jin's instructions on how to coexist with the other survivors of Flight 815, while secretly listening to every surrounding English speaking individual with perfect understanding. (Season One, "Pilot")
Last Appearance: Asking a perfectly reasonable question after gazing upon Locke's corpse: "If this is John Locke, then who's in there?" (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: Her close proximity to the Man in Black is worrisome, but once she reconnects with Jin, she'll find a way to have a happy ending.
Will She Survive: Again, fingers crossed.
15. THE MAN IN BLACK
Played By: Terry O'Quinn
Occupation: Hater of Jacob, Wearer of Black
First Appearance: Based on what we know for sure, we first saw him on the beach of Hydra Island sporting the physical likeness of the recently deceased John Locke. (Season Five, "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham")
Last Appearance: Watching with satisfaction as Jacob's fresh corpse roasts in the middle of a fire. (Season Five, "The Incident")
One Sentence Prediction: As Locke is dead, it's likely that O'Quinn will spend much of season six as the Man in Black, the duplicitous entity that orchestrated Jacob's death, is possibly the Smoke Monster, and is most likely responsible for several other malicious happenings on the Island.
Will He Survive: For the sake of everyone else we love on "Lost," let's hope not.
Check back tomorrow for another edition of LOST IN NUMBERS, a series of daily features running until the final season premiere of "Lost" on February 2, 2010.
