It's good to be a movies reporter on days like this. You all know "Weird Al" Yankovic, right? The polka-loving spoofsmith famous for recording such hit knockoff songs as "Eat It" (to the tune of Michael Jackson's "Beat It"), "Like a Surgeon" (to the tune of Madonna's "Like a Virgin") and "Smells Like Nirvana" (to the tune of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"). He also starred in a movie, the hilarious 1989 comedy -- yes, hilarious -- "UHF."
Now, Yankovic has announced that he'll step behind the camera for his next flirtation with Hollywood, in an interview... with himself! In true oddball fashion, the comedian/singer posted a self-interview on his personal blog, running through his general plans for the project. Or it could just be one big joke. That is how Yankovic rolls, after all.
The big news for fans is that this will not be a "UHF" sequel. Sorry to disappoint you hopeful fans. It will also not be a documentary on Winston Churchill. It will however be a live-action movie. Yankovic is currently on his third draft, though he's still waiting for a green-light to move ahead with the production.
The other big question on fan's minds is whether or not the funnyman will take the leading man role. "No, but I’ll be making an appearance in it," he said. "Cartoon Network had requested that I develop a show with a much younger protagonist – the actual star of the movie will most likely be teenage."
Yes, that's right. In the interview's intro, Yankovic reveals that he's been going back-and-forth with the fine folks at Cartoon Network -- they're fans, unsurprisingly -- about the possibility of him doing... something. "Series, features, animation, live-action… they were open to anything," he writes. Yankovic wouldn't share any plot details, but he did indicate that his touring schedule means that production won't begin any earlier than this fall, and possibly later.
It all sounds pretty legit and non-jokey to me. Which tells me that he's saving his best stuff for the movie. And that's a good thing.
"Ahhh... a red snapper. Mmmmm... very tasty!"
What do you want to see from a Yankovic-directed feature? Has "UHF" been too long absent from this world? Is a sequel what he really needs to be focused on?
