As far as 2010 comedies go, it’s hard to imagine one that sounds more promising than “The Other Guys.” I mean, it’s got Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Steve Coogan, Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes and Paris Hilton in it, it’s directed by “Anchorman” genius Adam McKay – and it even has a scene when Derek Jeter gets gunned down! I mean, what's not to like?
The film also features Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – who told me recently that he saw his first clips from the film and it looks as hilarious as you’d expect.
“The movie’s funny. I saw some footage the other day. It’s awesome,” the burly superstar explained. “The action is fantastic; it holds up in a great, great way. And of course, the comedy is great. You’re gonna dig it.”
Johnson said that he and Jackson are a buddy cop team, but the roles mainly serve to show the marked difference between their cool, calm professionalism and the anything-but attitude of the main characters. “Well, it’s actually about ‘The Other Guys.’ And the other guys are Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg,” he explained. “[We’re] the main guys, if you will; the superstar guys. Sam Jackson and I, we’re superstar cops in New York City, beloved by the city.”
“A couple of things happen here and there which I can’t tell you, and then the other guys come in the picture,” added Johnson, who can be seen in the comedy “Tooth Fairy” on January 22nd. “The other guys happen to be Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.”
“By the way, it was a great set to work on,” he explained, praising the work of the improv-heavy filmmaker and frequent Ferrell collaborator in charge of the project. “Adam McKay is just an outstanding director, and one of the most collaborative directors across the board – comedy or not – that I’ve ever worked with, and I appreciate that. So, I look forward to working with him again – and of course, working with my buddy Will.”
Although Johnson didn’t spend a lot of time on the set, he promised it would be more than his hilarious “Reno 911: The Movie” cameo from a few years back where he walked on camera as a cop, declared himself in charge of the situation “And then I die,” he remembered of that cameo. “No, it’s a bit more.”
As for Jeter, the former WWE star told us that he wasn’t on set when the fellow athlete filmed his cameo. “No,” he explained. “I didn’t meet him.”
Instead, Johnson spent most of his time with Jackson. “It was great working with Sam, he was fantastic,” he explained of the flick, which is due in theaters August 6th. “You’re gonna like the movie, man, it’s really good.”
