FROM SPLASH PAGE: "Sherlock Holmes" arrives in theaters this week, pairing "Iron Man 2" star Robert Downey Jr. with actor Jude Law — who remains a far less prominent star in the comic book movie world than his co-star, despite his comics cred-inspiring ink. (He has a tattoo of Rorschach from "Watchmen.") However, an October rumor seemed to indicate that Law was on track to change all that with a role in "Thor" alongside Robert De Niro.

Unfortunately, the rumor turned out to be just that, as Law explained to MTV News during the recent "Sherlock Holmes" red carpet event.

"Was there?" said Law when told there was a widely circulated rumor tagging him for a role in Kenneth Branagh's film about the Marvel god of thunder.

Bret Michaels knows a thing or two about women. He might know a few more things about love. So that's why, when the "American Pie" team needed a male expert in all things love and peanut butter, the "Rock of Love" star and Poison frontman seemed like the likely candidate to make a cameo in "American Pie Presents: The Book of Love," which hits stores today.

"Well here's what I know. These are the facts. Obviously I'm very aware of the series," he told MTV News. "They had actually called and said 'Look we have this part and we think it would be funny. It's a very peanut butter-oriented part, in which no one will ever look at peanut butter the same again.'" Read More...

I'll admit, this is one of the stranger posts I've ever written. At the end of the summer, we ran a flipbook image gallery featuring the cast of the stage show adaptation of Troma Entertainment's "Toxic Avenger." This latest gallery amps the geekery up to 11.

Darth Vader and a squad of stormtrooper lackeys popped up at the New York Stock Exchange this morning to ring the opening bell. Oddly, they were joined by R2-D2, the plucky little robot that has aided the Rebellion against Vader's Empire time and time again. Did the Dark Lord of the Sith finally capture the droid, wiping its memory and turning it into a tool of evil? No one knows. Regardless, I'm willing to accept Vader's brutal tactics so long as he's willing to put them to work in fixing our broken economy. This Friday is Christmas, a day in which millions will go to the movies following their gift-giving and other holiday rituals, and as usual there are plenty of new releases opening wide for them to choose from. There's something for the kiddies, something for the adults and something for both action-fiends and classic literature buffs. And of course there are those who'll be catching up on or returning to the beautiful 3D world of "Avatar."

But for audiences looking for something less mainstream, there are also a few new titles out in limited release. Of these, one will be expanding its scope to play nearer to you in coming weeks, while the other two are available for viewing on demand through most cable services. So keep them each in mind and seek them out when and if you can. Read More...

The weekend's sad news concerning Brittany Murphy resulted in a lot of yesterday's content being shunted to today, including this week's Box Office Poll. That scheduling change in no way diminishes that quality of the options available to movie-goers going into the Christmas weekend.

Let's start with "Sherlock Holmes," director Guy Ritchie's action-packed take on the master detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This movie is great, a blockbuster thrill ride that infuses those oh-so-familiar Holmes tropes with Ritchie's instantly recognizable stylistic flair. If you've seen "Avatar" already -- or even if you haven't! -- I highly recommend checking out "Holmes" during the coming holiday weekend. Read More...

FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: It's not even 2010 yet, but already we're counting down the days until "Valentine's Day" hits theaters. Ensemble romantic comedies tend to be some of the better rom-coms that are put out nowadays (look at this year's "He's Just Not That Into You" or our personal Christmas favorite, 2001's "Love Actually"), and even though we have some reservations on how this particular star-fest will hold up, it's still something we can't wait to see.

The second trailer (see it after the jump!) hit theaters over the weekend, and it's definitely showing off its aspect that is getting all the buzz: its massive cast. We see in the trailer how much of the film will be spent interweaving its characters with one another, such as can be seen with Ashton Kutcher in particular and at the Anti-Valentine's Day party lead by Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel.

Peter Jackson loves books, and books love Peter Jackson. The Oscar-winning director has already put his signature stamp on the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Lovely Bones," and in addition to his upcoming producer work on "The Hobbit," it appears that Jackson is bringing yet another novel series to the big screen.

The Dominion Post has heard that Jackson's Weta Workshops is quietly adapting Philip Reeve's "Mortal Engines" science fiction novels for the big screen. While no official announcement has been made just yet, a spokesman for Jackson didn't deny the project and said that "any comment should come from Peter."

Jackson, of course, has no comment at this time, so we should consider this a rumor until we've heard more. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: From the quotable "Clueless" to the hard-bitten "8 Mile," Brittany Murphy has left behind a legacy of remarkable onscreen roles. But before her sudden death on Sunday, the 32-year-old actress also completed work on several films and was getting set to begin another in January. Not much is known about these low-profile projects, so MTV News got in touch with various producers and reps connected to the films to figure out their status and when audiences might have the chance to see the actress at work in the future.

"Abandoned"
Before her passing, Murphy completed work on this psychological thriller in which she plays a woman with a history of psychiatric issues who accompanies her boyfriend (Dean Cain) to the hospital for surgery, only to have him disappear without a trace. Hospital staff claim to have no record of him on file and suggest the entire scenario is a manifestation of her damaged psyche. It soon becomes clear, however, that darker forces are at work, as the film becomes an examination of theft and betrayal.

DESC"Fringe" is a show that's built entirely on the idea of opposing alternate realities, and that central premise is about to leak over into our realm of reality.

According to Sci Fi Wire, Fox has decided to air an episode of "Fringe" titled "Unearthed" on Monday, January 11th, in an effort to combat NBC's "Heroes" return. The catch? "Unearthed," while a new episode for viewers, is hardly a new episode for the "Fringe" cast and crew — it was originally filmed as a season one episode. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.

Best Picture:

"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.
