DESCIt's easy to see why J.J. Abrams is such a hot commodity after revitalizing the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and making "Star Trek" cool again with last summer's blockbuster reboot. But the director's next voyage might not be with Ethan Hunt or the U.S.S. Enterprise — it could be something wholly unknown.

In a New York Times interview with Paramount Pictures chairman Brad Grey, it's revealed that while Abrams' name is still attached to the "Mission: Impossible" and "Star Trek" franchises in some capacity, the filmmaker's next directorial project might be a new unannounced "tentpole" film. FROM MTV.COM: When "Spider-Man 3" actress Bryce Dallas Howard was tapped to replace Rachelle Lefevre as vampire Victoria in the third "Twilight" film, "Eclipse," the 28-year-old didn't need a last-minute study session to ace her character. She was already a fan of the wildly popular series.

"I had already read the books. I had actually seen 'Twilight' several times, much to my husband's chagrin," Howard told MTV News while promoting her upcoming release, "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond." "Whenever Robert Pattinson would come onscreen, I would grab my husband's hands and start squeezing, and he'd be like, 'Stop squeezing my hand!' "

Norse history is going to hit in a big way in 2011. First and foremost, there's "Thor," based on the Marvel comic inspired by Norse mythology. And if Wikipedia is correct (unlikely), there's a chance of a long-ago-rumored live-action "Hagar the Horrible" movie set for release that year. Finally, a drama about Vikings from director Mel Gibson and producer Graham King ("The Departed") is set to begin shooting next fall, meaning it will probably be in theaters at some time the following year.

According to Variety, Viking history enthusiast Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the untitled film, which is currently being scripted by William Monahan (both of whom also had a hand in "The Departed"). The plot has not been revealed, but we can presume this will be a bloody action epic, similar to Gibson's "Braveheart." Perhaps there will also be some sort of focus on the Christianization of Scandinavia during the Viking Age, given Gibson's past success with "The Passion of the Christ." Read More...

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Last week, we checked in with previous "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight" writer Jane Espenson about the grand finale of her arc on the popular comic book series that has brought the adventures of Sunnydale's finest slayer from television to comics. With Buffy left hanging (literally) upon discovering some new powers (she's flying!), it was only right to check in with the author who will be taking up the scripting duties upon Buffy's return to comic shop shelves: celebrated novelist and comics writer Brad Meltzer.

Meltzer kicks off his run on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight" with February's issue #32, the penultimate arc of the series before "Buffy" creator Joss Whedon takes over and brings "Season Eight" to a close. The biggest questions on everyone's minds, however, have yet to be answered — namely, what's up with Buffy's new powers and the identity of the mysterious masked villain, Twilight, who has caused so much trouble for Buffy and her allies.

I picked Meltzer's brain to see if we could get any clues.

The results of our Box Office Poll are a forgone conclusion this week, but let's do one anyway, if only for laughs. James Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar" is going to crush it, no question. Box office dominance for Cameron's long-in-development film -- and his long-awaited return to directing, the first feature-length effort since "Titanic," in 1997 -- is as certain as it was for "New Moon" during its opening week.

People want to see this movie. Even if "Avatar" is an unholy mess, it's going to sell tickets. Fortunately for Cameron and his partners at 20th Century Fox, the movie is not an unholy mess. Far from it, in fact. We'll delve into that later today; for now, let us consider the other options available to moviegoers for the coming weekend. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: It was a Sunday morning in late August and Quentin Tarantino was hunkered down in his Hollywood Hills home, trying to shut out the world. His chillingly bloody Nazi revenge epic "Inglourious Basterds" had opened two days earlier and the writer/director was following his normal ritual of not hearing his film's total weekend box-office haul until Monday. Then his doorbell rang.

Star Eli Roth and producer Pilar Savone were standing outside holding bottles of champagne and wearing T-shirts that stated the film's weekend estimate: over $37 million, the 46-year-old director's biggest opening ever.

"I never knew I'd make a movie that would do that well on an opening weekend, so that was pretty groovy," Tarantino told MTV News.

The second trailer for "Clash of the Titans" slipped onto the Internet over the weekend. The first trailer was no slouch, but this new one brings all sorts of thrilling money shots. You get Liam Neeson-as-Zeus (speaking even!), Ralph Fiennes' Hades, more giant scorpion action, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reveal of Medusa and -- best of all -- a partial reveal of the fearsome Kraken sea monster.

Plus, the unveiling of the movie's vaguely blasphemous new tagline, "Damn the Gods." Get psyched people. The gods will be damned on March 26 of next year.

Move along. There's no embedded trailer to see here. You will get to see it soon enough, in lovely hi-def, when Warner Bros. officially releases it. That is all.

FROM MTV.COM: A lot of films try to lay claim to the old "most anticipated of the year" handle, but it was clear that the world premiere of "Avatar" Thursday night was indeed one of the biggest, baddest, call-your-friends-right-away events of 2009.

After 14 years incubating in director James Cameron's brain and years of production on soundstages and within the most sophisticated computers money could buy, "Avatar," the once-ultra-secret project known as "Project 800," finally premiered to an enraptured and appreciative London crowd.

You probably know this if you're a "Twilight" fan, but "New Moon" star Taylor Lautner hosted "Saturday Night Live" this past weekend. The episode had its highlights and its lowlights, as has become the standard for the sketch comedy series in more recent years. The best moment may well have been Lautner's opening monologue, during which he referenced his relationship with a "certain country singer," his abundant shirtlessness in "New Moon" and his inappropriate response to the Kanye West/Taylor Swift showdown at the MTV Video Music Awards. He also showed his badass tendencies with some impressive kung fu/dance stylings.

Check out the monologue in the clip below or head over to Hulu.com for the full episode.

Everyone makes mistakes. Even celebrities (especially celebrities?). Some of those errors in judgment are more permanent than others, like getting a tattoo of your significant other's name only to later break up. D'oh!

That's what happened to Denise Richards, who you've most recently seen on the E! reality series "Denise Richards: It's Complicated" (its second season ended in July, no word on a third). Fortunately for Richards, she's got resourceful friends. The actress hit up her pal Kat Von D, noted tattoo artist and start of the "LA Ink" reality series, to fix the offending body mark. Kat came through with a very tasteful Tinkerbell-like fairy, which you can check out in today's Daily TwitPic after the jump. Read More...
