In case you missed all of the yapping that we and other media outlets have been doing today, the nominations for the 2010 Golden Globe Awards dropped this morning. As is the case every year, there are some obvious picks, a few surprises and plenty of discussion points to get the talking heads... uhhh... talking.

The best place to start is with a straight-up numbers breakdown. Of the 12 completely open movie categories -- Best Foreign and Best Animated don't really apply, as they're so specific -- there are some interesting trends to consider. The Golden Globe Awards are traditionally viewed as a barometer for what to expect at the Academy Awards later in the year. Reading it isn't foolproof of course, and the landscape could well be changed next year due to tweaked voting rules and an expanded Best Picture category, but it never hurts to ponder the possibilities. FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: It's coming down to crunch time, people. Today the Golden Globes have announced their list of 2010 nominees. There were some pleasant surprises, some let downs (my heart breaks at "District 9" only being nominated for Best Screenplay), but still plenty of noms that have we at Hollywood Crush pretty darn excited.

First and foremost, both Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga got nominated for their outstanding roles in "Up in the Air" (press play above to hear Anna talk about her role). While it's unsurprising, the news bodes well for the two in terms of Oscar talk. However, they're up against some pretty stiff competition with Mo'nique in "Precious," and Julianne Moore and Penelope Cruz are never actors to be taken lightly.

The Bear Jew's entrance in "Inglourious Basterds" is pure badassery. Dressed in a sleeveless undershirt and with a baseball bat in one hand, this Jewish-American solider played by Eli Roth saunters up to a captured Nazi and takes a swing at his head like it's the bottom of the ninth and he's looking to hit one out of the park.

The scene comes early in the film, but its impact reverberates through the entire picture—and the picture's impact continues to reverberate months after its release. With an almost $40 million opening weekend and a $120 million domestic gross, "Basterds" became the biggest film of Quentin Tarantino's career and stands to be a major player this awards season. With the DVD hitting shelves on Tuesday (December 15), Roth called up MTV News to talk about celebrating the movie's financial success, inviting Tarantino over for Passover and another "Basterds" film that just might happen in the future. FROM SPLASH PAGE: When MTV News sat down with "Avatar" filmmaker James Cameron ahead of this week's "Behind The Screen" special (Wednesday, 4 PM EST), his blockbuster 3-D film and the new footage from it that we're revealing during the special weren't all that was discussed. Yesterday, we brought you an update on "Battle Angel Alita," Cameron's planned adaptation of the popular manga series, and now we have some thoughts from the filmmaker on a subject near and dear to our hearts here at Splash Page HQ: superhero movies.

"I've sort of made it pretty clear that Spider-Man was the guy I liked when I was a kid and I wasn't too interested in the others," Cameron told MTV News when asked if he's ever been approached about characters other than Spider-Man. (The director previously voiced his desire to bring Marvel's famous webslinger to the big screen during this year's Comic-Con International in San Diego.)

Specifically, you'll be able to check out exclusive clips from both movies as well as an exclusive new interview with "Avatar" director James Cameron.

For those who want a bit more of an advance look at things, we've got you covered as well. Tune in for first looks at 2010 comedies "The Other Guys, starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, and "Dinner for Shmucks," starring Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Zach Galifianakis. You'll be able to see all of it tomorrow on MTV, at 4pm EST/1pm PST.

The 2010 Golden Globe nominations hit this morning. As per usual, this triggered a stream of reactions from celebrities and the press that covers them. You can't have an awards show without a little bit of post-nomination griping. Which of course paves the way for post-win griping. As you might expect, eyes are primarily focused on the Globes' two biggest categories: Best Drama and Best Comedy/Musical. So that's the first one we're going to consider too: what's right, what isn't, who's deserving, who's notably absent... Read More...

When summer tentpoles start to drop in 2010, one of the first shots fired will be director Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood." We hadn't seen anything from it until today, but it's hard not to look forward to a movie that will reunite the award-winning "Gladiator" team of Scott and star Russell Crowe.

This new international trailer is all the look you'll need to confirm that this is indeed another action-oriented period piece from Scott. From the look of things, the subject matter is taken very seriously and Crowe is at his battle cry-ing best. The movie doesn't hit theaters until mid-May, but as first looks go, this is an encouraging one.

Fox Searchlight Pictures threw a little holiday party at a fashionable SoHo hotel the other night, and no wonder. The company has had a very good year. Three of its movies are getting serious critical love as the year-end polls come in. The animated “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and its director, Wes Anderson, have just won awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review (NBR); “(500) Days of Summer” won a best-film nod from the St. Louis Film Critics Association, and best-debut awards for director Marc Webb from the NBR and New York Film Critics Online; and “Crazy Heart” -- a movie that won’t even be released till this Wednesday –- won the best-actor award from the L.A. critics for its star, Jeff Bridges. Will Oscar action for these three pictures soon follow? Read More...

The nominations for the 2010 Golden Globes were released this morning. We knew they were coming of course, but that didn't stop the surprises. MTV's Eric Ditzian considered the possibility yesterday that "Avatar" would join the more predictable Best Drama nominees as a wild card, but I'm still somewhat surprised to see it on the list. It's a great movie and director James Cameron deserves the accolades he's receiving, but I would have preferred to see one of the more original contenders, such as "District 9" or "Moon" in its place. Of course, this speaks to the monumental year that Hollywood has had; it's hard to make a case that any Best Drama Contender doesn't deserve to be there.

The Best Musical/Comedy category is a bit more discussion-worthy. Where on earth is "Zombieland"? Or hell, how about "The Informant!"? I would have taken either of those over "The Hangover," which seems to be there purely for its surprising summer box office performance. It was an okay movie, with a few high points, but not exactly what I'd call one of the best comedies of the year. Hit the jump for the full list of nominations. Read More...

If you're a heavy Twitter user, chances are you've already seen this morning's Daily TwitPic. It made the rounds yesterday in a big way, probably because it's so freaking hilarious. I can't help but feel bad for the little kid though.

If you're NOT a Twitter user, you probably don't know what the crap I'm talking about. "Up" is one of the year's biggest movies, both critically and commercially. Pixar rarely fails, but their tale of an old man's rediscovered love for life is a major win. Part of the reason for that is the lovable characters: Carl Fredricksen, the aforementioned elder, Dug, the simple-minded talking dog, and, of course, Russell, the peppy little fat kid and wilderness explorer. As it turns out, Russell is real. Like, really real. Just hit the jump to see for yourself in today's Daily TwitPic. Read More...
