DESCJames Cameron is no stranger to creating new forms of menacing cinematic creatures, though he may have finally topped himself in "Avatar" with the Na'vi.

There is certainly no shortage of dangerous flora and fauna that exists on the mysterious world of Pandora, but it's the Na'vi that pose the biggest threat thanks to their intelligence, speed, size and several other factors. It also doesn't help that human marines can link their brains up with Avatar versions of the alien race, adding a whole new skill set to a certain breed of Na'vi warrior.

Still, it's hard to say whether or not the Na'vi could hold their own against some of Cameron's other creations. Since we aren't likely to ever witness these showdowns, let's settle for the next best thing — hypothetical cage matches! Read more...

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Even though he hasn't been contacted by Marvel Studios, Sam Worthington would kill to play Captain America. Still, the actor — who stars in tomorrow's massively hyped "Avatar" from director James Cameron — understands that some fans would have a problem with an Australian assuming the most iconic American superhero's mantle.

That's not to say that Worthington should be ruled out from playing Steve Rogers — I personally would have no trouble with that casting, even if that's not the majority opinion — but in the spirit of finding an amicable resolution, I think we should explore some other comic book options for the up-and-coming actor, who is already signed on for "The Last Days of American Crime."

If the role of Cap goes to another actor, here are five other comic book heroes that Worthington could play fantastically.

It's not news that "Nine" director Rob Marshall is set to helm "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." Or that he's got a fresh approach in mind when the cameras start to roll. As Marshall recently admitted to MTV however, there are still a number of decisions to be made.

"'Pirates 4' is in process as we speak. So they're still writing," Marshall explained. "I've heard a couple of exciting ideas, but they're still in process. My hope is that we'll be able to shoot it sometime in 2010." Read more...

The decision-makers at Summit Entertainment know a good thing when they see one. By good thing, I mean Taylor Lautner. By Taylor Lautner, I mean shirtless Taylor Lautner fighting bad guys and stuff.

That's the method to Summit's madness as the movie studio is developing a new action film for "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" star Lautner titled "Cancun" based on a spec script from Eric Champnella and Grant Thompson. Lautner is developing the film alongside his father Dan Lautner. Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: So "Avatar," huh? James Cameron's little film about big blue aliens. We hear it could be kinda big.

But big as in the highest grossing movie of the year? Big as in all future CGI films must bow down to its technical splendor, its shimmering beauty, its utter — for a lack of a better word — Cameron-ness? All these questions have been the stuff of blogger bloviating for months, but now the public has a chance to weigh in. Will this 3-D motion-captured tale of the Na'vi aliens of Pandora and the human colonizers who arrive on their pristine planet to mine a precious mineral blow you out of your seat? Will you leave feeling underwhelmed?

Oh "Arrested Development" movie. You wicked temptress. One minute, you're happening. Then you're not. Then you're maybe happening, but somewhere far down the road. Then that ship has maybe sailed, but then it pulls into port again. So how about now? Are we there yet? Soon enough, says star Michael Cera...

"I'm pretty sure it'll happen, I just don't know when," the actor told MTV at a press junket for "Youth in Revolt," which hits theaters on January 8. "I think sometime next year, hopefully, we'll be shooting," he said, adding quickly once again, "I hope." Encouraging words, despite the qualifiers. Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: At long last, after more than a decade of vague comments and rumors, tantalizing glimpses and big talk, James Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar" is finally arriving in theaters Thursday (December 17) at midnight. The crowds will gather, the tickets will be sold and the movie will finally be considered in the highest court: public opinion. Is it a game-changer for Hollywood? Will it break records, à la Cameron's "Titanic," a 1997 release that still sits atop the list of highest-grossing domestic releases of all time? The opening weekend is only the first step, but it's a vital one in answering these questions.

"The holy grail of 3-D has finally arrived," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "This is why all these 3-D venues were built: for 'Avatar.' This is the one. The behemoth."

Y'all know Roger Ebert, right? Noted film critic from Chicago. Used to be on TV. Well Mr. Ebert's been around quite a bit, working the scene, schmoozing with celebrities, hitting the festival circuit and so on. Yesterday, he apparently took a dive into his archives and dug out this little gem of an image for today's Daily TwitPic.

Hit the rewind button to the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It wasn't exactly a magical year for movies, with hits like "X2: X-Men United" and "Finding Nemo" balanced by the latter two "Matrix" movies, "Terminator 3" and the third "Lord of the Rings" movie (let's face it-- that one kind of drags on a bit). There was also "Masked and Anonymous," a little independent film written by and starring Bob Dylan and an ensemble cast that included, among others, Penelope Cruz. It wasn't very good. Ebert himself gave it only half a star. But he appreciated the players enough to snap this photo. Read more...
