Maybe I've been living under a rock, but count this as breaking news for at least one reporter — there is an "Addams Family" musical on its way to Broadway.
Variety reports that Jerry Zaks has been hired as a creative consultant to rework "The Addams Family," which is described as a "Broadway-bound tuner." In other words, a musical. In other words, amazing.
It's hard to determine whether or not a musical adaptation of the classic television series (and hilarious film franchise) is a ridiculously stupid idea or a ridiculously great one. Depending on the execution, it really could go either way. One thing is for sure — the idea of adapting classic TV shows as Broadway musicals is an interesting one. I wonder how well it would work for some other old school shows...
The A-Team: The adventures of renegade soldiers Faceman, Hannibal, Howling Mad Murdock and B.A. Baracus already has one of the greatest theme songs of all time. Now imagine that theme song with lyrics. Yeah, there's some serious potential here.
The Brady Bunch: Mike and Carol Brady and their many children — not to mention Alice — would be hilarious to see on stage, particularly if they were accompanied by some song and dance. Plus, the opportunity to see a musical number built on Marcia's accidental nose break is just too hilarious to ignore.
M*A*S*H: The television series of "M*A*S*H" is easily the best known version of the franchise, and while nobody could ever replace the show's amazing performances from Alan Alda and his peers, I'd still be curious to see a musical version of this Korean War story. Also, this is another show with a memorable opening theme that could feature some pretty kitschy lyrics.
The Partridge Family: This kind of seems like a no-brainer, right? I mean, the entire premise of "The Partridge Family" centers on a traveling family band of musicians. Translating that to Broadway should be a piece of cake — especially if there's a role involved for Danny Bonaduce.
Walker, Texas Ranger: Sure, it's not quite an old school classic, but I'll take any excuse to push for a Chuck Norris live and in concert event. Having him reprise his classic role with a musical and theatrical flair would just be the icing on the cake. Lee Marvin did it for "The Simpsons" (and now again in Spanish), so why not Chuck for Broadway?
