It's easy to see why J.J. Abrams is such a hot commodity after revitalizing the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and making "Star Trek" cool again with last summer's blockbuster reboot. But the director's next voyage might not be with Ethan Hunt or the U.S.S. Enterprise — it could be something wholly unknown.
In a New York Times interview with Paramount Pictures chairman Brad Grey, it's revealed that while Abrams' name is still attached to the "Mission: Impossible" and "Star Trek" franchises in some capacity, the filmmaker's next directorial project might be a new unannounced "tentpole" film.
"We have been wildly ambitious," said Grey of his and Abrams' film plans, which includes the secretive project. "It has much to do with the fact that we are feeling as strong as we are."
In the past, Abrams has said that he probably won't direct "Mission: Impossible 4," and helming a "Star Trek" sequel isn't a certainty, either.
As for what his secret tent pole project could be, it's probably not "The Dark Tower." He and "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof were once attached to adapt Stephen King's beloved novel series, but the duo have since abandoned the project.
The obvious question, then, is what project Abrams might be circling. Maybe it's just me, but it seems oddly serendipitous that Chris Pine recently landed the role of Jack Ryan for the next untitled Tom Clancy movie. So far, the Ryan movies have all been set up through Paramount. Abrams has worked with Pine before and, thanks to "Alias" and "Mission: Impossible," he's no stranger to the spy genre.
Could the secretive project be the next Jack Ryan adventure? Very possibly — but it's just as likely that Abrams is doing a live-action "Denver the Last Dinosaur" adaptation or any other number of things. For now, we're left to speculate on the acclaimed director's next project.
What do you think Abrams' next film will be? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter!
