Even if "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" wasn't universally embraced by longtime fans of the cartoon, comic book and action figure franchise, those very fans at least had the earlier release of "G.I. Joe: Resolute" — an animated movie written by Warren Ellis — to latch onto.
In fact, the idea of a sequel to "Resolute" is probably more exciting to a lot of fans than a sequel to "Rise of Cobra." While details are still unclear regarding further installments of both projects, it appears that some sort of new animated adventure is in the works for the "G.I. Joe" series.
The Moonbase 2 podcast recently interviewed Michael Bell, the voice actor behind Duke, Major Bludd, Lift-Ticket and other characters from the original "G.I. Joe" television series. During the interview, Bell dropped something of a bombshell by revealing that he'd just auditioned for a role in a new "Joe" series.
"I just read for a character named General Hawk," said Bell. "I'd love to get it. It's 26 [episodes]. I'd absolutely love to get it, but I'm not going to kill myself if I don't get it. But I'd love to get it, it'd be great fun."
Whether or not this new "G.I. Joe" animated project has ties to "Resolute," "Rise of Cobra" or something else entirely is completely unclear at this point. Other than Bell's brief comments, absolutely nothing has been made public about this project.
But unless Bell is auditioning for roles in an alternate universe, it sounds like a new animated project is on the way. As a longtime fan of the property — I used to mix and match the arms, legs, torsos and heads of my action figures all of the time as a kid — I'm pretty pumped about the idea of more animated "Joe," particularly if it spins out of the extremely awesome "Resolute."
Whatever the case may be, keep those fingers crossed, "Joe" fans. With any luck, we'll be seeing our favorite heroes and villains trading blue and red firepower with one another on the small screen before too much longer.
