'2012' Is Old News: Hollywood Apocalypses Through The Decades

Today, Roland Emmerich's latest world-ending epic, "2012," hits theaters. John Cusack, Amanda Peet and their pals race around the world, beholding one scene of devastation after another as an eco-catastrophe tears the planet apart. The story's premise is built on the belief that the apocalypse will come in the year 2012, as foretold by the Mayan calendar.

Unfortunately for Mr. Emmerich, Hollywood has already trashed the lovely planet Earth roughly a bazillion times over. From viral outbreaks to zombie uprisings, global warming to alien incursions... the people of this world have seen, suffered through and been almost completely annihilated by any threat you can imagine. 'Friday The 13th': Ranking The Series From Top To Bottom

Today is Friday the 13th, the unluckiest day of the year! That gives me an excuse to indulge in one of my favorite pasttimes as an amateur "Friday the 13th" historian. I can't remember when my obsession with the adventures of Jason Voorhees really began, but I do know that I've studied this series from top to bottom multiple times.

Perhaps you're new to the "Friday" game and need some guidance. The natural urge would be to start from the beginning, but that would be a mistake that would result in sadness and nausea. Since the continuity between movies doesn't matter in the slightest, it's best to take them out of order. But where to start? Glad you asked. EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Spacey Is Getting Into The Comic Books

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Kevin Spacey announced in 2008 that he and his Trigger Street Productions partner Dana Brunetti were going to start looking at comics. The company, which has helped bring films like "Fanboys" and next year's Facebook-based "The Social Network" to life, opened up a section of TriggerStreet.com to aspiring comics creators looking for feedback—but hasn't yet announced plans to produce anything of their own.

Spacey and Brunetti predicted things to come in 2010, though, and commented on their relationship with Devil's Due Publishing.

"You can say that there are things that are brewing." Spacey told MTV News.

Matt Damon Is Still Plugging Away At That 'Bourne 4' Script With Paul Greengrass

When "The Bourne Ultimatum" hit theaters in 2007, it was a logical assumption that it would be the last film in the Bourne series. Then Matt Damon signed on for a fourth film last October.

We reported over the summer that Damon was stumped when it came to creating an attractive plot to the fourth installment in the series. He reached out to the audience with an open invitation to anyone who had a brilliant idea for the story.

Two months later, the problem seems to be solved. In a recent interview with Total Film, Damon revealed that he and director Paul Greengrass are working feverishly on putting together a script for "Bourne 4." Read More...

'New Moon' Star Robert Pattinson Wants To Produce As Well As Act

FROM MTV.COM: When Edward Cullen was 18 years old in 1919, Hollywood superstars Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford came up with the idea for United Artists — a studio that would give actors greater control over which films they got to make and take the creative decisions away from commercial-minded studio execs. When Edward was 68 years old, Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier and Barbra Streisand made waves with their First Artists Production Company, pledging the same actors-first mentality.

Now, Robert Pattinson is determined to mark Edward's upcoming second-century teenage period with a similar endeavor, using his newfound star power to make the kind of movies he wants to see.

'Paranormal Activity' Tops $100 Million In Ticket Sales

While "Michael Jackson's This Is It" was busy crossing the $200 million box office threshold, director Oren Peli's "found footage" horror flick "Paranormal Activity" quietly slipped past $100 million in box office receipts. Not a bad haul for a movie that cost less than $15,000 to make.

It's been an impressive run from multiple angles, really. "Paranormal" was completed in 2007 and screened for festival audiences in 2008. It was picked up for release, shuffled around as studio forces re-aligned, pegged for a total re-do and ultimately trickled out slowly into theaters by way of an ingenious marketing campaign that ostensibly gave fans the power to bring the movie to their city. 'Michael Jackson's This Is It' Hit The $200 Million Box Office Milestone

FROM MTV.COM: The worldwide thirst for all things Michael Jackson continues unabated. So far, the "This Is It" documentary chronicling the late pop star's final rehearsals for a comeback tour that never was has raked in more than $200 million across the globe.

Reuters reports that the film has crossed the $200 million threshold after just two weeks in theaters, with overseas grosses vastly outstripping U.S. totals. Sony Pictures Entertainment said the movie had brought in $61 million in North America so far and more than $140 million internationally, with Japan among those leading the way at $27.2 million, followed by the U.K. — where Jackson was preparing to launch the "This Is It" 50-show run at London's O2 Arena — at $14.3 million.

That James Franco Appearance On 'General Hospital' Really IS Performance Art

Depending on your age, James Franco is either "the stoner from 'Freaks & Geeks'" or "the stoner from 'Pineapple Express.'" Or Harry Osborn I suppose, if you've seen the little-known comic book adaptation of "Spider-Man."

What you might not realize is that Franco has also dipped his toes into the world of avant-garde filmmaking. He's allied himself with one artist in particular: John Carter, who operates under the professional name Carter. The two collaborated on a 2008 film, "Erased James Franco," an hour-long piece in which Franco re-creates past performances -- his own and others, particularly Rock Hudson and Julianne Moore -- without providing any context. It seems that this Franco/Carter partnership is also what led to the actor taking his soon-to-begin guest gig on TV soap opera "General Hospital." Read More...

Kurt Loder Reviews '2012'

FROM MTV.COM: Even if most of the Earth were to be destroyed by a natural cataclysm predicted long ago by the ancient Mayans (or Hopis, or even the I Ching — take your pick), director Roland Emmerich would surely survive, if only to crawl back and polish off what little was left.

Going in to Emmerich's "2012," I was prepared to set my brain on spin-cycle and just roll with it — who doesn't enjoy a good CGI soak now and then? And there is in fact some snazzy digitalia on display here: a monster tsunami crashing over the Himalayas; a spectacular White House takedown (yet again); and some monster-wave ship-twirling that's truly, uh, titanic. An L.A. freeway buckles and falls, Las Vegas craps out, and the coast of California rears up and slides right into the ocean. All that, plus lots of collapsing high-rise real estate, fireball storms and geysers of boiling black magma.

Broken Lizard Plans 'Super Troopers' Sequel, Brian Cox Expected To Return

Super TroopersI'm a huge fan of Broken Lizard, so much so that I'll even defend the widely panned "Club Dread" until I'm blue in the face. But like most lovers of the comedy troupe, I'm most at home with "Super Troopers," their glorious highway cop movie filled with pranks, schemes, ugly truck drivers, Shenanigans and tons of hilarity.

Given my affinity for that movie, I'm understandably psyched about today's news that a "Super Troopers" sequel is officially in the works. During an interview with Movie Cultists to promote the upcoming film "The Slammin' Salmon," the Broken Lizard gang offered a quick update on the much hoped-for sequel. Read More...
