Surprised? Don't be. "New Moon" is big news. When "Twilight" hit theaters almost a year ago, no one really expected it to grow into the phenomenon its become. This Friday though, that's the real litmus test.

"Twilight" did almost $70 million in its opening weekend last year, comparable to the past weekend's "2012," which brought in $65 million. While it certainly isn't a bad opening, the phenomenon feels bigger than that. Maybe it's because, working at MTV, I'm constantly inundated with "Twilight" coverage. Whatever the reason, "New Moon"'s weekend earnings will offer additional insight to just how large Stephenie Meyer's series has become. We already have a pretty good idea, by way of Fandango. FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: It’s taken a little over a year for Robert Pattinson to be considered a staple heartthrob worldwide. With the crazy success of the “Twilight” book series came the crazy success of the first film, catapulting its stars into instant, albeit unbidden, fame. Though he’s on the road now promoting “New Moon” (out this week!), we figured we would take some time to look at the evolution of Robert Pattinson.

Click the picture below to follow the evolution of Rob in pictures!

Born on May 13, 1986 in London, England, the hunk started out his career rather appropriately by following in his mother’s modeling footsteps at age 12. Ironically, he would later come out and explain that the reason this stint in the fashion world lasted only four years was because he was tall and feminine and it was at a time where “the androgynous look was cool.” Once he started looking more like masculine man we have grown to know and love, the job pool dried up.

To be fair, there are some solid options opening in theaters this week: new releases, expanded releases, limited releases... there's a little something for everyone. "2012" was an easy weekend winner to predict last week, though there wasn't a whole lot for director Roland Emmerich in the way of competition. There's more to consider this week, but it doesn't matter. The box office winner was decided long ago, months even.

"New Moon," the second entry in the "Twilight" series, opens on more than 4,000 screens on Friday, to the delight of Twilighters everywhere. A strong performance isn't in doubt, though it will be interesting to see just how gangbusters the numbers really are. Remember: "Twilight" opened less than a year ago. It performed very well, but it wasn't the record-breaking success that the current phenomenon would suggest it could have been. With all of this time to percolate in the public eye, it'll be interesting to see how the weekend numbers pan out. Read More...

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Wes Anderson's stop-motion animated "Fantastic Mr. Fox" is so rich with detail — every frame bursting with color and movement and utter coolness — it's almost hard to know where to look. During one scene, though, something jumped out to me: a fox reading a comic book.

The moment occurs about 2/3 through the movie, when Mr. Fox and his family are on the run from three murderous farmers. Fox's 12-year-old son, Ash (voiced by Jason Schwartzman), kicks back and opens a comic book called "White Cape." The audience gets a peek at the cover, but we never see a single page. The title does go a long way toward explaining why the young fox wears a makeshift white cape everywhere he goes — you could say White Cape is the bushy-tailed equivalent of Superman.

It turns out that while viewers never get more than a passing glance at the comic, Anderson and his team went to great lengths to design the book — so much so that they might turn the concept into an actual series.

If you're a true "Twilight" fanatic, you've probably already taken -- or at least started planning -- a vacation to Forks, Washington, the main setting for Stephenie Meyer's books and their film adaptations. Maybe you were one of the participants in June's Summer School in Forks. Or maybe you're on a tight budget, and so had to make do with the documentary "Twilight in Forks."

Well now you need to go a little further to prove yourself die-hard Twilighter status. According to USA Today, the latest hot spot destination for fans is Volterra, Italy. The small Tuscan town is home to the Volturi vampire coven, which features prominently in the latest movie installment, "New Moon." Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Lil Wayne lives by his own rules when it comes to recording music and, apparently, when it comes to making movies too.

The rapper is the subject of the forthcoming documentary "The Carter," set for a straight-to-DVD release Tuesday. The film, much like Wayne's records, is anything but conventional.

In fact, according to the project's producer, Quincy Jones III ("Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel," "Beef"), the Cash Money Records lyricist shunned the idea of a typical documentary in favor of a more raw, vérité look at his life.

Bill BelichickEverybody makes mistakes, even a three-time Super Bowl winning football coach like Bill Belichick. If a man like Belichick can cause a series of fatal game-changing events due to one bad coaching call — as he did during the fourth quarter of last night's game pitting his New England Patriots against the Indianapolis Colts — then you shouldn't feel too bad about breaking your mother's favorite vase or skipping out on "Drag Me To Hell" while it was in theaters. Alright, maybe you should feel bad about that last one.

But the Patriots head coach isn't alone in his ability to turn a single blunder into a catastrophic calamity — it's a storm that comes into port quite often in the hills of Hollywood. In fact, the following five film franchises have all seen similar collapses due to a fourth quarter fumble. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Fans of Stephenie Meyer were pleasantly surprised when the author appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Friday (November 13) and revealed a secret about the second book in the series, "New Moon."

"I'm pretty open about my writing, but there was a different ending to 'New Moon.' Originally it was much quieter [and] in Bella's head," she revealed, adding that it was at the suggestion of her mom, Candy Morgan, that she changed the ending. "I introduced the Volturi earlier than expected and that whole scene at the end is there [because my mom thought it would be better that way]."

File this one under "here's hoping." Brian Cox is a gifted performer. One of those actors whose mere presence is enough to elevate a movie. "Troy" wasn' that great, but Cox helped make it bearable as Agamemnon. And his roles in "X2: X-Men United" and "Super Troopers" -- already fine films -- are unforgettable, career highlights without question. Also don't forget: Cox was the first person to fill the role of man-eater Hannibal Lecter (spelled Lecktor back then), in Michael Mann's "Manhunter."

Now the word is that Cox is up for one of the dwarves in director Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of "The Hobbit." The news comes from AICN, with Cox being described as a "major contender." The report is clear to state that there's no way of knowing right now if the role is cast or if the producers are just looking at the veteran actor, but either way -- I'll take any Cox/"Hobbit" association I can get. I'm going a little rogue with this morning's Daily TwitPic. Warmoth's pick last Friday featured "Star Trek: The Next Generation" star LeVar Burton (the guy with the eye visor thing) posing for a photo op with Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon. Of course, the importance of Armstrong's new moon discovery can't hold a candle to another "New Moon," the one that hits theaters this Friday. Not this week.

That's right, the second installment in Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series swoops into theaters in a matter of days. This morning's Daily TwitPic celebrates that fact with a look at the new Jacob Barbie doll. The Bella and Edward dolls are old news; now it's Jacob's turn. Shirtless Jacob (if he's got another look, I've not seen it). Check out the pic after the jump. Read More...
