'Lost' Theorizing: Could Bob Dylan's 'Visions Of Johanna' Herald The Coming Endgame?

Posted 11/2/09 11:00 am EST by Josh Wigler in Commentary

DESCFans of "Lost" are understandably pining for the final season to begin — and even then, they're going to have an extra wait to endure — but recent words from co-creator Damon Lindelof should pacify some curiosity for the time being.

Lindelof engaged in a lengthy interview with USA Today, revealing as many season six details as possible without spoiling the show's future. Interestingly enough, the "Lost" showrunner revealed that the final season's mood could best be matched by the song "Visions of Johanna" by Bob Dylan.

"I have that song on my iPod, and when I hear it I think about the show," said Lindelof. "There are certain lyrical phrases in that song that are very well-suited to 'Lost.'"

As a "Lost" fanatic myself, I decided to take Lindelof's advice and pore over the lyrics of "Visions of Johanna" for any hidden meaning. Here are some of the possible connections I found based on my own theories — check them out and then let me know some of your ideas.

"We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it..."

"Lost" has already demonstrated that physically fleeing the Island doesn't necessitate a full-fledged escape from the mysterious entity. Indeed, the members of the Oceanic Six left the Island only to return some years later.

The season five finale left viewers wondering whether or not the future could be changed — the detonation of an atom bomb would either kill all of our heroes or jettison them into a future where Oceanic Flight 815 never crashed on the Island — but this lyric of Dylan's implies that Jack, Kate and the others are inseparable from the Island, no matter how much they try to deny it.

"Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously... / He's sure got a lot of gall to be so useless and all..."

Jack is the one that really spearheaded the potential game-changer at the conclusion of season five — but assuming that the survivors of Flight 815 can't escape the Island no matter what they do, Jack's actions are for nothing. You could probably say that about a lot of Jack's actions, as even Sawyer pointed out that Jack's decisions as the de facto leader haven't led to anything but trouble.

The only way for Jack to truly help himself and those around him is to embrace his fate and the specialness of the Island, rather than pursuing the "useless" path of trying to escape destiny.

"Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while..."

One of the greatest mysteries on "Lost" is the random whispering heard throughout the Island's jungles. Whether the whispers come from the Others, the time-displaced Oceanic survivors or something else entirely still remains unclear, but I'm guessing that this is an answer we'll receive in the final season.

If we look at the above lyric through the framework of the whispers, it could be that "Lost" fans simply need to rewatch the episodes containing the mysterious jungle-bound voices and listen carefully — perhaps some secret meaning towards the show's end game could be gleaned from these scenes.

"Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him..."

Perhaps the biggest tragedy of "Lost" is the story of John Locke, who was revealed to be truly dead despite appearances to the contrary in the fifth season's finale. Now, an impostor has assumed John's likeness — whether this is an incarnation of the Smoke Monster or some other unnamed nemesis is unknown, but the impression is that the villainous creature traveled a long road to get to this point.

Confidence schemes have long been part of the fabric of "Lost" from Sawyer's occupation to John's own father, but the con played upon both Locke and the audience — that he was truly special and destined for greatness — could be the saddest of them all. As "Lost" heads into the final season, we're sure to learn more about this mysterious parasite that led Locke to his grave and claimed the beloved character's appearance.

Can you think of other lyrics from "Visions of Johanna" that fit your predictions for "Lost's" final season? List them below in the comments section and on Twitter!
