I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jerry Bruckheimer's upcoming game-to-movie translation of "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is the next great hope for adaptations of this sort. Video games have a spotty history in the world of cinema. In fact, that's probably a generous characterization. While a few have certainly made money, none have yet achieved that rare parity between critical and box office approval.

Bruckheimer's "Persia" has a shot though. The mega-producer has a great track record with event blockbusters: the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, two "Bad Boys," "Black Hawk Down," "Beverly Hills Cop" and a string of Michael Bay-helmed hits, including "Armageddon," "The Rock" and "Pearl Harbor." Okay... maybe not so much with "Pearl Harbor." FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: We were all stunned when we got a chance to see Michael Sheen (finally!) in character as Aro. The new "New Moon" TV spot featuring the Volturi gave us a chance to see the bad vamps in action.

But Michael is one of the few actors around (the only one I can think of offhand) who has had the opportunity to play both a vampire and a werewolf. Anyone looking to see a darker modern take on vampire mythology should check out the "Underworld" series, in which Michael plays the werewolf, Lucian.

When we got a chance to talk with "New Moon" director Chris Weitz, we asked him what side Michael would fall on in the battle between the supernatural creatures: vampire or werewolf?

The definition of just what makes a cult hit has changed in the ten years since Troy Duffy made "The Boondock Saints". The ubiquity of the Internet and the coming-of-age of a generation weaned on the copious amount of very specific information it offers has given almost every piece of media, film or other, its very own cult following.

By information, I mean easier access and smaller audiences. When you say a movie earned itself a cult following by "word of mouth" in 2009, you're typically saying that it fostered early hype thanks to a small but vocal online community, further cultivated through viral marketing. "The Boondock Saints" was the real deal, one of the very last cult movies to find its audience through literal word of mouth. Read more...

Over 75 percent of the 30 highest-grossing films of the last three years were based on an existing entertainment franchise, which just goes to show there's a reason studios keep reimagining movie history instead of creating something new: audiences love them too.

We all learned over the summer that Ridley Scott, director of the original "Alien," will be returning to the franchise he created to direct a prequel. Given the series' overarching story, fans very reasonably speculated that a prequel would take a look at the events immediately preceding the first movie.

It seems that may not be an accurate assumption anymore. Scott, who in London recently to support his daughter's entry at the London Film Festival, took some time out to chat with Empire about some of his plans for the prequel. Yesterday, concert documentary (sort of) "Michal Jackson's This Is It" opened wide in theaters. The pop legend passed away suddenly in June in the midst of his preparations for a 50-show residency at London's O2 Arena. The doc collects snippets of his rehearsal footage for those performances, presenting viewers with a unique glimpse of Michael Jackson's final days. You regular readers should know this well alredy, as we've been covering the crap out of it.

In honor of this week's Jackson fanfare, today's Daily TwitPic is a very special one for Tyrese Gibson. Said his tweet yesterday: "Here's a pic of the very MOMENT I met Michael Jackson.. (RIH) Rest In Heaven.." It's not the best shot you'll ever see, captured from a high angle and with neither man fully facing the camera. Also, Tyrese Gibson shares his very special moment with Michael Jackson, clinching himself the top spot in Twitter Pic of the Day. The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).

As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.
