'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'It's big, it's loud and now the bonafide monster film of the year is rolling out on store shelves. Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" made gobs of money at the box office and now it almost singled-handedly owns the release calendar this week. But a few other titles do manage to break through the shape-shifting pack, and we'll cover them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, October 20, 2009.

There's not much purpose in rehashing the plot to "Revenge of the Fallen," the follow-up to the bombastic intergalactic war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Anyone interested in the DVD and Blu-ray has already seen the film, so the only thing really worth discussing are whether the presentation and special features make it a must-own. Well, if you count yourself a fan of the robot-friendly franchise, then it's a definite yes. Like the first film's home video release, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is one of the best looking and best sounding discs around, especially on Blu-ray. Bay's films have frequently been reference-quality material for home theater systems and this one is no different. Action pops off the screen in amazing clarity and the 5.1 DTD-HD audio track could probably knock halls in your walls. Read More...

Today's eBay Prop-Watch pick is kind of a gimme. "Saw VI" is out on Friday. So what better item to feature than a prop from "Saw V"? Not that I can really speak from a position of experience; those "Saw" movies are far too gory for my fragile sensibilities to endure. I've got to give it up for the franchise though; all five previously released films in the series have grossed five times or more than their budget.

So today's Prop-Watch pick is from "Saw V." It might come as a surprise to learn that it isn't a piece of a Jigsaw puzzle/death trap. Nor is it a Jigsaw doll, an item which appears to be fairly popular on eBay. No... today's item is something completely different. And wholly terrifying. If I caught a glimpse of this on the street late at night, I would quickly run in the opposite direction. Screaming would be a distinct possibility. Hit the jump for a look at what might inspire such madness. Read More...

Following the widely-perceived failure of "X-Files: I Want To Believe," does anybody really want or need to see a third installment in the "X-Files" movie franchise? Anybody? Anybody? Bueller?

Apparently, David Duchovny — none other than Fox Mulder himself, kids — is up for it.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, the "Californication" star spoke about his hopes for a third "X-Files" film. Duchovny believes that "X-Files 3" could be perfectly appropriate for a 2012 release, thanks to the year's supposedly catastrophic nature according to Nostradamus and Roland Emmerich's (via the Mayan civilization) prophecies. Welcome to our latest episode of Freeze Frame! This edition takes a look at the recently released "Toy Story 3" trailer, which gives us (gasp!) the first hints of story for Woody and Buzz's long-awaited return to the silver screen. There are too many months to wait between now and the movie's June 2010 release; we've been watching and re-watching the trailer so much that a Freeze Frame became downright necessary. Enjoy!

Yesterday, the discovery of 32 planets outside of Earth's solar system was announced by an international team of scientists. The existence of these planets — dubbed "exoplanets," short for "planets outside of our solar system" — should only further the line of thinking that we are not alone in this universe, even if our other neighbors are uninhabited planets in galaxies far, far away.

But what if they're not uninhabited? Indeed, what if these planets aren't even unfamiliar? The Movies Blog team happens to have a well-connected source close to the discovery of the exoplanets, and we can exclusively confirm that at least five of these brave new worlds have been featured in past, present and future works of fiction!

Okay, that's a lie. But let's put our "make believe" hats on for a moment and imagine that these five fictional planets were counted amongst the newly discovered exoplanets... Read More...

Eli Roth's performance in "Inglourious Basterds" may not have been the best of the bunch, but his character -- Donny Donowitz, aka "The Bear Jew" -- is certainly the most unforgettable. He's the strong, silent type mostly, but with wide swaths of crazy thrown in to keep the Nazis on their toes. Sure, all of the Basterds are crazy. But Donowitz's is a special blend; even with no more than 10 or 20 lines of dialogue, he distinguishes himself as one of the movie's most unforgettable characters.

As such, you can expect to see a lot of Bear Jews walking around next Saturday, on Halloween. It's not a terribly difficult costume to prepare for and it comes with the added bonus of giving you an excuse to carry a baseball bat around for the night. Why that's a good thing is anyone's guess. Just please make sure not to hit people with said bat. The toughest part of a Bear Jew costume is the accessorizing. Luckily, Roth has his Twitter followers -- among them, the MTV Twitter-Wood feed -- covered. Today's Daily TwitPic serves up a guide to giving your Bear Jew costume that authentic feel. Read More...

Summer action romp "Terminator Salvation" hits DVD and Blu-ray today. Continuing the story started by James Cameron back in 1984, "Salvation" forges new ground for the series by serving up a story after the apocalyptic Judgment Day we've been hearing about for all these years. John Connor (Christian Bale) is the leader of the human resistance and we finally get to see him bring the fight to the evil robots of Skynet.

The universe created by Cameron has become a truly rich one, spawning a (criminally underrated) television series, comic books and novels. It's the last one that I'm here to feature today. "Terminator Salvation: Cold War," from Titan Books, is freshly arrived on store shelves. Set in two locations at two different times -- Russia 2003 and Alaska 2018 -- the story follows a different front in humanity's war against the machine armies. In the excerpt after the jump, read as a loen Terminator dispatches a hulking grizzly bear with ruthless efficiency. Read More...

The exclusive clip below, from the Uma Thurman-starring "Motherhood," doesn't actually feature Minnie Driver riding on a submarine. She talks about it, sort of. It's... well, it's complicated. Or maybe "tricky" is a better word. I think you should just watch the clip and see for yourself.

Summer blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is out on Blu-ray and DVD today. The discs are loaded with extras, as you'll find out later in Brian Jacks' DVD Report. You can get a sneak peek though. In the clip below, an exclusive glimpse at the bonus content, star Shia LaBeouf talks about the experience of his second go-round with "Transformers" and the joy of watching newcomer Ramon Rodriguez go through the same things he did.

With “Saw VI” bleeding its way into theaters this weekend, not only is it time once again for the annual October franchise, but it’s also time for another autumn tradition: chatter about the production of the next film. And now that word is out on “Saw VII” being filmed in 3-D, the series stars are eager to talk to us about how it might impact Jigsaw’s master plan.

“I’ve never acted in a 3-D film,” explained Tobin Bell, a veteran actor looking forward to diving into the realm many consider to be the future of blockbuster moviemaking, but promising he’ll still be the same old John Kramer. “I don’t plan to do anything different than I always do.” Read More...
