Welcome to Gore Girls! MTV contributor Terri Schwartz doesn't know crap about the horror genre, and she's volunteered to be our Movies Blog guinea pig. She has a good guide too. Fellow contributor Jenni Miller is a bonafide horror enthusiast, and she's willing to walk Terri through her formative experiences with blood, guts, monsters and maniacs. Have you ever seen "Creepshow"? Think of "Trick 'r Treat" as a sort of Halloween-themed homage, a spiritual successor with none of the same players and an entirely different intent. It's an anthology movie, four discrete stories set on the same block in a sleepy little suburban town one Halloween night. Was it creepy enough to scare the Gore Girls? Hit the jump to find out!
Terri: I felt "Trick 'R Treat" was kind of a mess. It had werewolves, zombies and a pumpkin monster, with no real coherence connecting the three. But in that sense, I really liked it. From the start they set you up with the comic book feel of the movie, and I think the idea of have numerous but not necessarily connected bad guys lends itself to the comic book idea.
Jenni: Right, like "Creepshow" (which I, uh, haven't seen...). But I think the stories could have been interwoven better, rather than the characters just passing each other on the street. I also agree that the comic book intro and things give you a feel for how it's supposed to be sort of goofy and fun, so it's hard to expect something really meaty from it. However, I think that it's a shame that it was sent direct to DVD.
Terri: Especially with the fantastic cast! Anna Paquin and Tahmoh Penikett!
Jenni: And Stacy Gibb. And also, a kid with a sack on his head equals always creepy.
Terri: He was awesome! Also, how adorable was the principal's son? Shame his dad had to, you know, be a murderer. And then eaten by werewolves.
Jenni: The whole virgin/menstrual/dark woods/Red Riding Hood thing is good. I liked "Ginger Snaps" better though, when it came to that sort of discussion.
Terri: Did you find the movie scary?
Jenni: No.
Terri: I didn't either. Though I did jump at a couple of parts. Sometimes I felt like I was trying too hard to connect all the pieces of the film.
Jenni: Yeah, it's just supposed to be fun, which I can dig. I mean, the violence is silly, it's not that scary, but it's about candy and sight gags (ahem, you know the scenes I mean) and Jack 'o' Lanterns. It needed more story, I think.
Terri: I agree.
Jenni: It was supposed to be in theaters two years ago, and it's been screened at different festivals, and the horror community has really embraced it, so I don't know why it was never released theatrically. I hope that local theaters will play it on Halloween next year!
Terri: I feel like this is the movie you want to see the day before Halloween. That way when Halloween comes around, you're especially freaked out.
Jenni: It's a fun party movie. But I didn't love it. Have some people over, drink some beers, watch the movie the night before Halloween to get in the spirit!
