It's been a little while since we've heard anything about the impending "Gears of War" movie adaptation, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been movement going on behind-the-scenes. In fact, it looks like a new soldier has been recruited into the fold to battle the Locust Horde.
According to /Film, screenwriter Billy Ray has been tapped to work on the script for "Gears of War," which is currently pegged as a Len Wiseman directing vehicle. Ray's work on the screenplay comes hot off the heels of "Wanted" scribe Chris Morgan, the most recent writer attached to the project.
It's currently unclear how Ray's version of "Gears of War" will differ from Morgan's, if at all. When Morgan spoke with MTV News earlier this year, he said that his take on the film was currently being budgeted out. He also had enough involvement in the project to weigh in on who could play Marcus Fenix in the movie.
Given Morgan's insight into the "Gears of War" production process, it's likely that the screenwriter is still involved in the film in some capacity. Perhaps Ray is simply polishing Morgan's script. But if Ray is completely replacing Morgan — if he's working on an entirely different screenplay from scratch — then "Gears of War" could still be a long ways from production.
As for how Ray got involved in the project, the folks at /Film speculate that Ray's recent collaboration with Wiseman on "Motorcade" may have paved the way for the screenwriter's attachment to "Gears of War." No matter how Ray landed the job, I just hope he knocks it out of the park, as an intelligently crafted "Gears of War" movie would be fantastic to see.
