I imagine that the video game-loving readers out there will back me up on this: "Call of Duty" is ready-made for a big screen adaptation. Preferably one built around the universe created in Infinity Ward's "Modern Warfare" titles, the second of which hits store shelves in November. The series of military-themed first-person shooters has long since distinguished itself as an industry leader, with explosive set pieces, benchmark-setting visuals and Hollywood-caliber writing.
Mega-publisher Activision apparently agrees. Trademark watchdog Trademork.com (via /Film) spotted a September 21, 2009 filing to protect the title in relation to “pre-recorded movies featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure, music, theatrical performances and/or animation.” This doesn't mean that a production is ramping up, simply that Activision is clear to begin making such plans.
That said, I'm hoping there are people in positions of power with serious plans for a "Call of Duty" movie. I'm no small fan of the series, and it would be awesome to see Captain Price's legendary handlebar moustache rendered live and in living color on the big screen. I can't imagine what kind of story we'd get -- probably a straightforward modern military epic -- but the real joy would come from seeing the series' familiar recurring characters as actual human beings. That and the giant f---ing explosions.
Would you pay to see a "Call of Duty" movie? What if Uwe Boll directed it? Who would you like to see direct? Star?
