"Whip It" may feature a mostly female cast, but it is does not fall into the traditional definition of a "chick flick." For her directorial debut, star Drew Barrymore snatched up a script from "Derby Girl" author and professional roller derby athlete Shauna Cross. The story follows a former beauty queen (Ellen Page) who, in an act of rebellion, leaves her properly coiffed world behind for the rough and tumble action of a professional roller derby league.

In the clip below, Page's Bliss Cavendar, still a newcomer, is goaded by teammate Dinah Might (Juliette Lewis) with harsh words and flung food. The situation escalates and messy shenanigans ensue. Enjoy the rumble.

I'll admit, I feel a little bit bad for Karyn Kusama. Between star Megan Fox and Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody, the "Jennifer's Body" director has kind of been overshadowed by the super-team she's assembled. Still, the comedy/horror flick which hits theaters this Friday is looking very entertaining, and Kusama has a lot to do with that.

I'm excited then to hear talk of her potential next project, a "[David] Cronenberg-inspired body horror" tale focusing on gender issues. Rachel Weisz is attached, but that's all Kusama would say. The project isn't even necessarily a go just yet; as Kusama tells io9, "let's hope that some day it finally gets some money." Read More...

At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner stopped to speak with MTV's Jocelyn Vena on the red carpet. Lautner was of course on hand to introduce an extended trailer for "New Moon," hitting theaters on November 20, with fellow stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

After mentioning that he expected fans to "start crying" after seeing him shirtless -- quickly adding "that would be bad" -- Lautner moved on to the topic of the next movie in the series, "Eclipse." The original "Twilight" was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and the "New Moon" follow-up by Chris Weitz. The third entry, due for a summer 2010 release, is in the hands of David Slade, a filmmaker known most for directing the "vampires in Alaska" flick, "30 Days of Night."

FROM MTV.COM: Following a long and very public battle with cancer, Patrick Swayze — a film and television star and dance icon — died Monday (September 14). He was 57 years old.

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer early last year, the news shocked fans who had long followed the career of Swayze, a muscular heartthrob most famous for playing a virile dance instructor in "Dirty Dancing" and a no-nonsense tough guy in films like "Road House" and "Point Break." As the tabloid headlines of his imminent demise intensified, he launched a new crime show called "The Beast," even though the noticeably thinner star admitted that shooting was difficult on him physically.

Editor's note: There were apparently some technical difficulties last night, as Twitter-Wood never ran. So in lieu of today's Daily TwitPic, here's a special morning edition of Twitter-Wood for 9/14/09.

The VMA's trended nearly as well in the Twitter-Wood feed last night as they did on Twitter, and if you've had any internet access over the last 24 hours you probably know that a lot of that was provoked by Kanye West's unexpected interruption during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech. Elizabeth Banks, Kat Dennings, John Stamos and others contributed to the online conversation that followed, expressing their thoughts on his interjection.

Football was pretty popular last night as well, and if you didn't know that Ashton Kutcher was a Bears fan, you do now, thanks to Demi Moore's photo tweet of her defeated fan-husband after the Green Bay Packers stuck it to Chicago in the fourth quarter. Check out all of those posts, as well as Edgar Wright's suggestion to Jason Reitman, Sasha Grey in a Wonder Woman costume and much more. It's in the Twitter-Wood report for September 14, 2009. -- At last night's 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, hip-hop superstar Kanye West... well... he kinda made an ass out of himself. For those who missed it, Kanye grabbed the mic out of Best Female Video winner Taylor Swift's hands during her acceptance speech and proceeded to laud Beyonce and her video, which he thought should have won. The funny thing is, it's far from the first time Kanye's been a public jerk. Many of his outbursts have been attached to MTV appearance, but not all of them. Check out the video gallery that Movieline put together. (Movieline)

-- I'm a big fan of We Love You So, the official blog portal for Spike Jonze's adaptation of Maurice Sendak's book, "Where The Wild Things Are." This might be my favorite post yet though. A series of Photoshops featuring Wild Things in... unusual locations. Enjoy. (We Love You So) Read More...

Before diving in with the coming week's releases, let's take a quick look at last week's. I think the poll results usually paint a pretty telling picture of who is reading this blog. The weekend's big box office winner, Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," failed to pick up a single vote in the poll. "Sorority Row" took top spot in the poll (70% of your votes), followed in a distant second by "Whiteout" and "9," which were basically tied, at 15% and 13% respectively.

My takeaway is that you readers are on the younger side -- ie below 30, or at least not yet parents -- and that you prefer spectacle to schmaltz. That's definitely an overly broad generalization, but I do find the fact the weekend's biggest earner, by quite a wide margin I might add, didn't even pick up one vote in last week's poll. Now, let's take a look at what's in store this week... Read More...

In last night's "New Moon" trailer debut, the "Twilight" fans of the world finally got a glimpse of the members of the Volturi vampire clan in action. The group is led by Aro, a gaunt, ancient vamp played by "Underworld" werewolf Michael Sheen. As you might have gathered, the actor is no stranger to playing a bad dude.

He's going to be exploring his more fun-loving side for his appearance in director Joseph Kosinski's "Tron Legacy." The "New Moon" star confirmed to ComingSoon.net that he will step into the role of a nightclub owner. The nightclub in question is a location which will factor into a large-scale scene featuring "hundreds of extras." Read More...

Last night's "New Moon" trailer debut gave audiences an action-packed glimpse at some of the goings-on in director Chris Weitz's follow-up to the 2008 hit, "Twilight." Of course, with so much material flying by, it's very easy to miss things. Like ghostly Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) appearing on the roadside as Bella (Kristen Stewart) cruises along on her new motorbike. Or the Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) and his Wolf Pack taking on Laurent (Edi Gathegi). Or, of course, the many gratuitous shots of a shirtless RPattz. There's a lot of him though, and he's kinda hard to miss.

To aid you in your gawkings and trailers analyses, I have here a Stop Motion image gallery featuring a whopping 70 stills pulled directly from the trailer. Click on the image below to enjoy the goods or hit the jump to watch that trailer in full one more time.

Steven Spielberg has long planned an Abraham Lincoln-centric biopic, but it looks like actor-director Robert Redford is going to beat the "Indiana Jones" filmmaker to the punch. However, where Spielberg's vision purported to tell of Lincoln's life, Redford is instead focusing squarely on the slavery abolishing president's death.

Variety reports that Robert Redford will direct actors James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn in "The Conspirator," the American Film Company-produced period piece that focuses on the aftermath of President Lincoln's assassination. Read More...
