As we edge out of summer, the DVD release calendar is getting considerably more crowded than in weeks past. That's good news for movie fans, as studios offer up their blockbusters from earlier in the year, as well as a steady stream of catalog titles as we head into the holiday season.
This week kicks off with one of the most peculiar releases of 2009, Seth Rogen's "Observe and Report." Those expecting the straight-up comedy usually associated with the Apatow protégé should prepare for disappointment. Rather than offering the next "Superbad" (which Rogen co-wrote), "Observe and Report" (which he did not) is a twisted -- albeit comedic -- look at a mall security cop who doubles as a mentally unbalanced outcast with a hankering for weaponry. More than most, it's a love-it-or-hate-it proposition, but if this is your cup of tea then the DVD and Blu-ray offers up a healthy dose of extras. Those will HD players will receive picture-in-picture commentary from Rogen, Anna Faris and director Jody Hill, while both formats get nearly 30 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, various vignettes and a gag reel.
Those who appreciate the sappier side of cinema get their fill with "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," a romantic comedy take on "A Christmas Carol" starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. Throughout the film, McConaughey's character is dragged through his past by the spirits of three women as he struggles to re-evaluate his love life and, of course, become a better partner for some lucky girl. It is what it is. The DVD and Blu-ray helpings leave a lot to be desired -- we get a few cast interviews and deleted and extended scenes. Pretty much par for the course for this type of film.
The only other wide release film seeing release is "Terra," an outer space animated adventure that didn't exactly blow up the box office, but managed to snag quite a few fans. Joining "Terra" in the cosmos are two Blu-ray offerings in the "Star Trek" family: all three "Next Generation" films packaged as the "Movie Collection" and Season 2 of the original series.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost get Blu-ray love with "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead" hitting store shelves, while Rob Zombie's long-languishing animated film "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto" finally sees the light of day.
On the TV side, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Season 2" also drops.
DVD AND BLU-RAY NEWS:
All six "Rocky" films step inside the Blu-ray ring on November 3, the same day Ashley Tisdale's "Aliens in the Attic" arrives. Ben Stiller's at it again as "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" opens its doors December 1, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and "Lost: Season 5" land December 8, the final season of "Star Trek: The Original Series" targets December 15, and Paul Thomas Anderson's seminal "Magnolia" hits Blu-ray on January 19.
NEXT WEEK:
"Monsters vs. Aliens" and "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" animated films, Sam Mendes' "Away We Go," Blu-rays of "Labyrinth" and "Dark Crystal," and a massive Blu-ray box set for the 70th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz" (on that note, stay tuned for some fun with that release).
