There's nothing alien about the moviegoing crowd's relationship with "District 9," the Peter Jackson-produced, Neill Blomkamp-directed science fiction epic that opened in the top box office slot on Friday evening. The film -- which is what an adaptation of the "Halo" video game could have looked like had studios trusted Jackson and Blomkamp's vision -- opened to at least $13 million, with that number set to go higher after west coast numbers are accounted for. This is double-take-worthy news. Hell, it's late. Go take yourself a triple.

"close talks" with Universal Pictures to play blood-sucker Lestat Du Lioncourt in a big screen return for Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles," according to a report at Bloody Disgusting. It should be noted that there's no attribution for the news, though BD has a good track record with scoops.

Downey would be the third actor to wear Lestat's fangs after Stuart Townsend, in "Queen of the Damned" (2003), and, perhaps most famously, Tom Cruise in "Interview with the Vampire" (1994). There's no word yet on how the planned return to Rice's fiction will approach the story, with or without the "Iron Man" star. Read More...

Peter FacinelliWarmoth's out, and he stuck me with the Twitter-Wood duties. He was here in the office only a few hours ago. Why didn't I force him to sit down and write it, under penalty of torture?!??!?! I don't have the routine down the way he does, so I hope you'll forgive what is sure to be a lesser TW column. I try my best, but Warmoth's shoes are big ones to fill.

I think I hit the main beats. "Twilight" star Peter Facinelli 'fessed up to being a "Star Trek" fan after a follower called him out for referring to a lousy "Trek" fight from the original series. Also, Mandy Moore proved that she has good taste in music while Dax Shepard and Stephen Fry both made some stunning sociological observations. Plus a very special Twitter Pic of the Day from "Harry Potter" star and "Superbad" fan Tom Felton, who got to hang with Jonah Hill recently. I'm @geminibros and this is your daily update of the goings-on around Twitter-Wood. Read More...

New Moon"Twilight" stuff. It's a pretty random assortment, though much of it predictably relates to this week's "New Moon" trailer. I'll admit that I've been somewhat remiss in bringing you these weekly round-ups, but its been crazy up in this MTV newsroom lately. Before the jump, you've got top stories 6 through 10 for the past week. After the jump, 1 through 5. Enjoy.

10. Rounding Up Your Reactions To Rachelle Lefevre Being Re-cast in 'Eclipse' -- You all know that Bryce Dallas Howard replaced Rachelle Lefevre in "Eclipse." It made quite a big splash, that news. So big that I felt compelled to dig through your comments and share some highlights in a dedicated blog post. This blog post.

9. 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn' Plagiarism Controversy Devolves Into Hilarity -- Some nutjob writer decided that because she and "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer wrote a book featuring a wedding, a honeymoon and a troubled pregnancy, all of it with supernatural undertones, Meyer's later effort was a work of plagiarism. I won't reprint the other writer's name here because let's face it folks: she's gotten more than enough press already.

8. EXCLUSIVE JUDD APATOW BLOG: 'Funny People' Director Answers Questions You Haven't Asked -- Unbelievably, this guest blog entry from "Funny People" director Judd Apatow is still popping. Glad y'all are enjoying it.

I don't get you people. Not at all. We've got the enormously hyped "District 9" dropping today. We've also got a shiny, new "New Moon" trailer, with the added bonus of a feature-length movie starring Vanessa Hudgens -- "Bandslam" -- playing right after. And yet the majority of you enjoyed those delectable morsels -- at 25% and 22% of your votes, respectively -- in favor of "The Time Traveler's Wife," which stole 40% of your votes and hearts. Wacky.

The rest of the weekend options, including "he Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" -- which looks quite funny -- didn't turn out with numbers worth reporting; all of them in the sub-5% range. I've given plenty of coverage to both "District 9" and the "New Moon" trailer here. Since "The Time Traveler's Wife" doesn't seem to need any boost, I'm going to devote the rest of this space to pimping Jeremy Piven and his first-class sales team in "The Goods." Behold the funny...

Ah "District 9." You're finally here. Now everyone gets to share in the joy, to see how exquisitely well-crafted you are. Director Neill Blomkamp rises to the challenge in his first feature directing gig, spinning out a tight, smartly laid out story which sails along, bolstered by an impressive first time leading man performance from Sharlto Copley. Enough poetic waxing about "District 9" though... on to the subject of this post.

Today's eBay Prop-Watch pick isn't a prop. Maybe it's a replica-- I think it popped up at some point in the movie. This should be a familiar image to anyone who's been following the summer sci-fi adventure though. "District 9" has been subject of a fairly extensive viral marketing campaign, and lots of cool ephemera has come out of it. And that's where the inspiration for today's pick lies. Read More...

District 9FROM MTV.COM: "District 9" seems an oddly misguided sci-fi movie. Where are the Hasbro toy connections? The skeletons of ancient TV series? There's not even a comic book involved. What is wrong with this picture?

Actually, the movie is based on ... what's the term — ah, yes: an original idea. It's a good one, too. The film does have aliens, but they're not the traditional galactic marauders. These amiable extraterrestrials were just cruising along over South Africa some 20-odd years ago when their huge spaceship suddenly conked out in the sky above Johannesburg, where it's still parked. The humans below managed to ferry the passengers down — more than a million of them — but then were stuck with the problem of what to do with these unwanted interlopers. Assimilation was out of the question — the creatures resembled big weird crustaceans with a snoutful of wriggling worms, and their native tongue sounded like a flock of ducks being eaten alive. They did have some interesting technology — especially in the weapons department — but it was bio-mechanical, and could only be operated by beings with alien DNA. Bummer.

This one just came across my desk tagged as "URGENT." Apparently we have an interview with "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Jennifer's Body" star Megan Fox coming up soon. Very soon. And in the spirit of always keeping you readers involved in the day-to-day production of content for this blog, we want your questions. I can answer one of them myself: no, Megan will not go out on a date with you.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE HAS PASSED: THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUESTIONS

Adam McKay and Will FerrellOne of the reasons to see “The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard,” is for the cameo from Will Ferrell, who also produced the new movie through his company, Gary Sanchez Productions. Typically, uncredited appearances like this are also not promoted so they can be a surprise to the audience. Yet Ferrell’s scene, in which he falls to his death from an airplane while wearing an Abe Lincoln costume and fighting off sex toys, can currently be seen on FunnyorDie.com, where it’s been viewed more than 130,000 times.

Hilarious as it is on its own, you might rather skip the sneak peek and watch the scene in the context of the movie. That is, if you think such a cameo makes a movie better as a whole. There are certainly some people out there who find a sudden appearance from a big star to be an unnecessary distraction.

“The Goods” is Ferrell’s fourth film in which he has an uncredited cameo, so we decided to take a look at those past three appearances as well as two pre-fame bit parts -- that feel like cameos in retrospect -- in order to gauge if he can improve upon or distract from a story with just a few minutes of screen time. After looking at each cameo, let us know which is your favorite and whether or not it made the respective movie better. Read More...

Kristen StewartThe time has arrived. I'll admit, I didn't quite realize what a phenomenon "Twilight" had become when I started this job. I hadn't read the books, nor had I seen the movie. Writing for this audience has been quite an education for me, but that all-important hole -- getting some firsthand experience with the franchise -- has remained unfilled. Until now.

This weekend, I am going to sit down and watch "Twilight." I know the basic gist of the story, but that's about all. I walk in with no preconceptions other than my awareness of the cultural phenomenon that it has become. On Monday, I'll report back here with my thoughts on the movie. I can't guarantee that I'll like it, but I do promise that it will get a fair shake.

Meanwhile, you'll all be watching the new "New Moon" trailer. Read More...
