Are you a fan of both “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Battlestar Galactica”? How about "MADtv"? If so, then your TV-watching dreams have come true with a casting announcement that links all three series'. Let's start with the whopper: James Marsters, who played fan-favorite Spike on “Buffy” and its spin-off “Angel,” has joined the cast of “Caprica,” an upcoming Syfy show that’s a prequel to the recently finished “Battlestar.”
Marsters will play a villain named Barnabus Greeley, described as a dangerous and unpredictable terrorist torn by his conflicting moral and carnal desires. The character appears to exist outside of the show’s primary focus, which is on two rival families: the Graystones and the Adamas (headed by Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales, respectively). Considering the actor’s appeal and sizable fanbase, it’s sure to be a major role.
Also joining “Caprica,” which began with a direct-to-DVD pilot this past spring and will continue on the Syfy network starting in January, is funnyman Patton Oswalt. The "King of Queens" mainstay has been receiving rave reviews this year for his performance in the upcoming indie “Big Fan” (Editor's note: Well-deserved raves; "Big Fan" is big fun.). For “Caprica” he will play recurring character Baxter Sarno, a comedian and talk show host who regularly features the Graystones on his program.
The new series has been likened to ‘80s prime time soaps like “Dynasty” and “Dallas,” but with a science fiction edge, of course. Marsters should fit in well considering “Buffy” was something like a supernatural soap opera. Not being a fan of these sorts of dramas myself, it’s Oswalt who has me most interested in watching, even if it does sound like a smaller role. Between his casting and my interest in the origins of the Cylons -- which the series will explicitly explore -- “Caprica” is beginning to make me forget all about that unnecessary and unwanted “Battlestar Galactica” movie that Bryan Singer is set to direct.
Are you “Buffy” fans glad to see Marsters cast in a new series? Any other Oswalt fans out there who are more excited about the comedian’s involvement in “Caprica”?
