The passing of iconic writer/director/producer John Hughes leaves a gaping hole in the film industry that will not be easily closed. In addition to all of the films he could have yet worked on, the rumor mill has been spinning over the last decade about a variety of sequels to some of Hughes’ most famous works. Here is a look at the sequels that could have been.
The Breakfast Club: Back in Detention
Back in 1999, Hughes was asked about the possibility of making a sequel to the film that redefined teen drama, saying, “I thought about it. I could do it in prose. I know what will happen to them. I know them. But to do it with real actors ... they'd never come back together again. There's no excuse that could ever put them in the same room ever again. There isn't anything in their lives after high school relevant to that day.” That seemed pretty final, but in 2005 Emilio Estévez, the jock of “The Breakfast Club,” said Hughes had an idea for a sequel with the students in college, “doing time again.” Estévez was looking forward to the film, as were we.
Seventeen Candles
After her time as teen idol in the eighties as one of the Brat Pack, Molly Ringwald has eased up on her acting career. Back in 2005 however, she was reported to be producing a sequel to “Sixteen Candles.” As of last year, she said she still was interested in a sequel, but would not proceed without Hughes being on board.
Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off
As of 2007, a completed script for a sequel to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” written by screenwriter Rick Rapier was making its way around Hollywood. Actually titled “Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off,” the movie was set on the eve of Bueller’s 40th birthday. Rapier's plan was to bring back the original “Ferris Bueller” stars and to have Hughes direct it.
Weirder Science
In an era where geek rep is actually worth something, it isn’t as big of a shocker to find the stars of 1985’s “Weird Science” to be total nerds. But in 2007, a remake of the classic was proposed, to be written by rumored “Arrested Development Movie” scribe Johnny Rosenthal and produced by Universal. The original report has mysteriously disappeared from Moviehole however, leading me to wonder if the news ever really broke in the first place...
Another Uncle Buck
Few would say Dan Fogler is anywhere near an adequate replacement for comedy icon John Candy. Someone thought he'd be pretty darn close though. In May of this year it was announced that Fogler was being considered to star in a remake of the 1989 classic, "Uncle Buck." Robert Ben Garant, who worked on “Balls of Fury” with Fogler, might direct the project. If it ever makes it past the rumor mill, that is.
Is there any John Hughes film you would like to see a sequel of, or would you prefer they be left alone? Would you go see any of these sequels or remakes without Hughes behind them?
