Green DayIt’s been five years since Green Day’s multi-platinum, Grammy-winning album “American Idiot” came out, but work on the material is still very alive. A musical adaptation is set to debut at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater in September and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong continues to push for developing the disc’s post-9/11 stories for the big screen. And he wants to do it in an unexpected way.

"I thought 'American Idiot' had a lot in common with something like 'Rocky Horror Picture Show,'" Billie Joe told The Associated Press. "It would great to see a film made out of it someday too." Read More...

The Fantastic Mr. FoxWes Anderson's modeled characters, who will be voiced by Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman and Jarvis Cocker showed up online for the world to see today. The pictures premiered in conjunction with the announcement that the first showing of Anderson's stop-motion Roald Dahl movie "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" will belong to the London Film Festival. His first foray into feature-length animation unsurprisingly brings back many of his standard actors, but the look of the film is entirely new territory for the man known for his work on "The Royal Tennenbaums" and "Rushmore."

"['Fantastic Mr. Fox'] was the first book I ever owned," Anderson told USA Today, where new pictures from the set appeared. "My brothers and I loved Mr. Fox and all the digging. We were obsessed with underground forts and tunnels." Read More...

In honor of the 25th anniversary of “Purple Rain,” I’m devoting today’s eBay Prop-Watch to some cool items relating to both the movie and the companion record release. As I mentioned on the blog earlier, I’ve never actually gotten around to checking out Prince’s classic movie. There are certainly bigger holes in my film education – would you believe that I only filled “The Godfather Part II” this past weekend? – but “Purple Rain” has been a longtime fixture on my list.

Of course, just because I haven’t seen the movie doesn’t mean I can’t pimp some cool movie-related merchandise. You super-fans who don’t mind spending a bit of cash should check out this auction for an original 1984 movie poster in what looks to be perfect condition. Just know that the investment will run you around $200. Read More...

The folks behind the re-imagining of "V" know they have their work cut out for them. Hitting the right notes with a new show based on an "event" sci-fi series that captured the country's imagination in the 1980s won't be as easy as showing a few actors swallowing furry guinea pigs or revealing their hidden scaly green skin.

In the pilot for the reboot of the sci-fi series about carnivorous reptilian aliens posing as benevolent "Visitors," screened for a mixture of excited and skeptical fans last week at San Diego Comic-Con, a teenager derides Roland Emmerich's "Independence Day" as a rip-off of earlier (and better) alien invasion movies as he and a pal watch a mothership descend above their city. It's an overt nod to the faithful who were glued to their televisions through two stellar mini-series (1983's "V" and the following year's "V: The Final Battle") and a short-lived, dodgy weekly variation, all of which also spawned a DC comic, Visitor dolls and a series of spin-off novels. "Paper Heart" was one of my favorite Sundance '09 screenings. It's a very touching, off-beat little film, part-documentary and part-fiction. Charlyne Yi goes on a cross-country search for the meaning of love with director Nicholas Jasenovec (portrayed in the movie by Jake Johnson) in tow. Interspersed with a series of random interviews are dramatized scenes of Yi's real-life relationship with "Year One" star Michael Cera.

The below video offers a look behind the scenes at how some of these ideas came together. This is the sort of movie that you walk out of with a smile on your face and a newfound lightness in your step. "Paper Heart" opens on August 7, so mark your calendar lovebirds.

You want to know when the next “Star Trek” will start shooting? Look out for paparazzi shots of co-star Zoe Saldana wearing some sweaty workout gear as she leaves the gym. Why? Because, as the woman who played alien linguistics expert Uhura explained to MTV’s Josh Horowitz at Comic-Con, when “Star Trek” ramps up, she’ll be forced to hit the weights again.

So has she renewed the gym membership yet? Saldana revealed that producers have indeed been in touch, making sure the actress is clearing out space on her 2010 calendar.

Kong: King of Skull IslandPeter Jackson's "King Kong" was okay. The titular ape looked cool of course, as did his beastly companions on Skull Island. A punchier edit would have been a good thing, maybe an abandoned sub-plot or two (seriously guys... "Heart of Darkness"?). It was no "Superman Returns," but "Kong" was nonetheless not screaming for a follow-up.

And yet, it looks like that's exactly what we're getting. Variety reports that Spirit Pictures has snapped up the rights to the prequel book "Kong: King of Skull Island," which hit shelves while Jackson's epic was in production. The story focuses on Kong's island home and how he came to be the King. For those out there who haven't read the book, expect to see other giant gorilla and dinosaurs as Kong makes his slow upward climb to the top of the animal kingdom of myth. Read More...

A big question that's been rattling around in the "Twilight" community over the "New Moon" movie is how Robert Pattinson's Edward Cullen will appear. The dreamy he-vampire shifts to the sidelines for much of "New Moon," appearing primarily as a voice in Bella's (Kristen Stewart) head. Since RPattz's disembodied voice won't thrill audiences in quite the same way that his bare-chested presence will, some creative license will be taken for the movie. As changes from book to movie go, I think this one will go over well.

Still, no one really knows how Pattinson's appearance will play out. No one outside the cast and crew that is. So when MTV caught up with Kristen Stewart and San Diego Comic-Con, we naturally asked her what the score was.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceThere's kind of a crazy number of releases dropping on our heads this week. Even if you put aside the 800 lb gorilla in the room -- the arrival of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" on IMAX screens -- there are still a great many options to choose from.

The biggest of them is probably Judd Apatow's contribution to summer '09, "Funny People." A more serious comedy, "People" follows superstar comic George Simmons (Adam Sandler), who is afflicted with an incurable disease and has less than a year to live. He hires a young up-and-comer named Ira Wright (Seth Rogen) to be his personal assistance/protege, and the two form a close friendship. It's good to see Apatow branching out a bit from the usual zany comedy. He has a light touch when he wants to; it shines through in "Knocked Up" and I'm excited to see how it plays in "Funny People." FROM MTV.COM: It's not hard to grasp why Purple Rain was such an event when it was first released, 25 years ago this summer: The album was a dizzying synthesis of rock, pop and R&B, and it still sounds groundbreaking today.

This was a defining moment for Prince and his greatest band, the Revolution (with which he shared, for the first time, both an unambiguous cover credit and, inside, some co-songwriting nods). The musicianship displayed on the record is exceptional: The arrangements are intricately structured, and the vocal work is dazzling; the electro-percussion is fat and beautifully ornamented, the guitars range from full-crush to feathery arpeggiation, and there are times when synthesized or actual orchestral beds drift off into stretches of harmonic abstraction that's rare in music aimed at the pop charts. (Four of the album's nine tracks were Top-40 hits; two of them — "Let's Go Crazy" and the great "When Doves Cry" — went to Number One.)
