Uma ThurmanUma Thurman never fails to impress me with her effortless ability to genre hop. While she's been playing it pretty loose and goofy since wielding that samurai sword in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" duology, her next project looks to straighten her right up.

Thurman is set to lend her luminosity to "Girl Soldier," the true and tragic story of 140 Ugandan girls who were kidnapped and enslaved in 1996. According to Variety,, "Soldier" is based on Kathy Cook's firsthand account of the incident, "Stolen Angels." Read more...

Alice in WonderlandUPDATE: The typo has been corrected below, but just so you all know: the Facebook fans on the winning page will get to see the "Alice" teaser on July 23, a full day before its proper release.

Every time I see something new from Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," I lose a few more of my increasingly precious marbles. Don't tell anyone, but I'm planning to stow away in Splash Page editor Rick Marshall's luggage so I can catch the delicious new "Wonderland" footage at Comic-Con.

But wait! Maybe I don't have to! To drum up interest in the movie -- like that's really a problem -- Disney is running a Facebook promotion. A trio of fan pages have been created, one each for Anne Hathaway's White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter's Red Queen and Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter. The fan page with the most followers at 4pm (Pacific) on July 23 gets first crack at the debut teaser trailer for the movie.

Look: we all know that Depp's Hatter is going to take this contest. No question. Just fan up now. Then continue past the jump to check out the newly released "official" synopsis along with four new images. Oh. YES! Read more...

Morgan FreemanSo I am off to see "The Ugly Truth" this evening. Rom-coms aren't my usual bag, but I've decided to break character and play against type for once. I don't know why I'm confessing this to you readers, other than to have something interesting to say at the top of today's Dailies. Now that that's out of the way, on to the news!!

-- "Discipline," a sci-fi novel by Paco Ahlgren, is getting an adaptation from David Permut and Steve Lee. The story follows some dude locked in a conflict with an unseen enemy. The outcome of their battle will "determine the past, present and future of human existence." Sweet. (Variety) Read more...

David SladeYou just can't turn your back on the Twitter-Wood feed. I stepped away for a couple of days to leave things in MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg's capable hands, and "Eclipse" director David Slade activated a new account. He hit the ground tweeting, too, commenting about notes he just received from Stephenie Meyer about the next "Twilight" film. (Editor's note: Clearly my hands are not terribly capable.)

Meanwhile, Jon Favreau was partying down this weekend, celebrating an end to principal photography for "Iron Man 2." Both directors, as well as two celebrities attending the Inter Milan/Chelsea match at Pasadena's Rose Bowl, an extremely confident Dane Cook and music suggestions from both Rainn Wilson and David Lynch also showed up over the last 24 hours. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter-Wood report for July 20, 2009. Read more...

Will ArnettWow is this a busy week. After the runaway success of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" last week -- and other shoe-in blockbusters in the weeks before it -- it's nice to see a little bit of variety for Friday's releases. "G-Force," with showings in two and three dimensions both, is an easy weekend win for families, provided they're not making a repeat (or first-time) trip to Hogwarts.

The CG animated adventure about a secret agent force of talking guinea pigs is a big-ticket item for a number of reasons. It is Disney's first (non-concert) live-action release shot in Digital 3-D. It is also produced by blockbuster-meister Jerry Bruckheimer in his 3-D debut. Then there's the knockout ensemble cast, which includes Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, Tracy Morgan, Will Arnett, Bill Nighy and Zach Galifianakis. Yeah, wow. Read more...

Voltronby Alan Kistler

Back in the 1980s, kids had a few cartoon heroes who they knew could taken on any enemy, no matter how powerful. There was "He-Man." There were the "Transformers." There was the "G.I. Joe" team. And there was "Voltron," “defender of the universe.”

Inspired by the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion, “Voltron: Defender of the Universe” takes place sometime in the future. Humanity is spread out among the stars, forming the Galaxy Alliance. The story focused on a group of space explorers: Lance, Pidge, Hunk, Sven and their leader Keith. While out in space they are captured by the evil King Zarkon, an alien tyrant from Planet Doom who, along with his son Prince Lotor, wishes to conquer the universe. Eventually the heroes escape to the beautiful planet Arus, where they befriend Princess Allura, whose father died in battle against Zarkon. Read more...

VoltronI'm a child of the '80s and damn proud of it. I used to rush home from school for my daily "Transformers"/"G.I. Joe" fix. "Sesame Street" and "Mr. Rogers" were totally my nursery school bag. I had spiked hair for crying out loud! Proud '80s child or not though, I don't really remember "Voltron" too well.

I had a die-cast toy model of course. And I did watch the cartoon to some degree. I remember that there are five flying lion robots/spaceships that come together to form the mighty Voltron. That's about all though. Still, it'll be enough to draw me into the theater when "The Dark Knight" producer Charles Roven, along with pals Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander, put out their silver screen adaptation of the import cartoon series. As you know, here on eBay Prop-Watch I usually try to bring you cool auctions for... well... props! Today is a bit different however. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, I've decided to highlight an object that is even rarer than anything I've shared here on Prop-Watch thus far.

No mystery today. If you haven't guessed what it is already based on that picture, I'll tell you: a real, actual moon rock. And no, it's not made of cheese. It is made of awesome though. Especially if you're a fan of all things outer space. What better way to celebrate 40 years since man first set foot on the moon than to buy yourself a small part of it? Read more...

Duncan JonesToday marks the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. Conspiracy theorists who have been crying "hoax!" for the past four decades may not be terribly excited, but everyone else should be able to appreciate the significance of this momentous event. We went into space people! And landed on another planet! ANOTHER PLANET!!

Anyway. A lot of moon-related chatter buzzing Around the Blogosphere today. Along with a few other things that are similarly out of this world. Like unbearable movies and unbearable movie journalists. I don't like to sling mud at my colleagues, but names aren't named and there's some funny stuff to read. Don't take my word for it though. Follow the jump to see for yourself! Read more...

WatchmenFROM SPLASH PAGE: The "Watchmen" Director's Cut DVD hits shelves this week, capping a limited-release run in theaters, and now that we're at the mid-point of 2009 it's hard not to look back on the film a little more fondly. With few blockbuster-level comic book films on the immediate horizon and mixed reactions to the last one ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") comic fans might feel an understandable urge to revisit Zack Snyder's adaptation of the epic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons series.

Along with 25 minutes of extra footage (and significantly more violence and gore, according to Snyder), the "director's cut of "Watchmen" will also offer a host of behind-the-scenes clips and making-of video moments -- including the following "The Unfilmable Is Filmed" featurette that puts the vast scope of the project in the spotlight:

Check out the clip at EXCLUSIVE: Check Out The 'Watchmen' Director's Cut DVD Extra 'The Unfilmable Is Filmed'
