During last night's primetime press conference, President Barack Obama elevated his "hip" factor even further by dropping a somewhat indirect reference to "The Matrix" into his defense of health care reform. Here's the quote: "If there's a blue pill and a red pill, and the blue pill is half the price of the red pill and works just as well, why not pay half price for the thing that's going to make you well?"
Of course, any "Matrix" fan will tell you that the blue pill is the wrong choice. That one is Neo's (Keanu Reeves) out, his last chance to remain blissfully ignorant of real-world realities. The red pill makes his "blinders come off," teaching him the truth of what the world has become. Is the President trying to tell us that we should chillax in our blissful ignorance? Or am I just picking nits? Check out the video below and decide for yourself; the reference comes in at around 2:22.

James Cameron's "Avatar" is already generating a lot of buzz at this year's Comic-Con International in San Diego, and the show's barely even begun. In fact, he probably didn't even need to bring the massive mech stationed at the 20th Century Fox booth to get people excited about the film -- but we're glad he did!
According to various reports around the 'Net, the 14-foot tall "powersuit" is an actual prop from the film, worn by human soldiers in Cameron's much-anticipated sci-fi epic.

Comic-Con didn't even wait for Preview Night to set the Twitter-Wood feed on fire today. It's already a trending topic, and San Diego is the place to be for Hollywood faces this week, whether they're in comic book movies, mildly comic-book-related movies, or just movies producers would like to peddle to comic book readers. As you already know, the "New Moon" cast will be there, and at least one of them is Tweeting about it.
Meanwhile, "Eclipse" director David Slade continued his tweet rampage today posting pictures from the filming locations he's been scouting. I've included links to his TwitPic photos, which you can find below, in addition to commentary on the new "Nightmare On Elm Street" remake, whether the franchise's original director will be at Comic-Con, and which actor really wants a role Sam Raimi's "World of Warcraft" movie. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for July 22, 2009. Read more...

The script for Disney’s adaptation of the classic Jules Verne character Captain Nemo is getting a revision, as Randall Wallace (“Braveheart”) steps in to rework the script previously penned by Bill Marsilii ("Deja Vu") and Justin Marks ("Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li"). As MTV recently learned, the film’s origin story focus will remain and producers have been traveling the globe to scout possible shoot locations.
“We’re just back from Australia on Friday,” producer Sean Bailey told MTV News. “We were looking around Australia and New Zealand. It’ll be a big, big globe-trotting movie. We feel like if you’re going to go 20,000 leagues under the sea, [the audience] needs to feel like you’ve done it with [Nemo].” Read more...

Trooooooon! Say it like you’re James T. Kirk shaking your fist at genetically-engineered mortal enemy Khaaaaaaaaaaan!
That was my reaction the first time I heard about Disney’s planned sequel to “Tron,” the classic 1982 sci-fi adventure about a man named Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who is electronically trapped by an evil artificial intelligence inside a computer mainframe. And it still captures how pumped I am for the new film which, as producer Sean Bailey confirmed to MTV News, will honor the roots of the original—lightcycles, tanks and more—while acting as what he termed a “stand-alone sequel.”
“You don’t have to know the ’82 movie to come in and appreciate and enjoy this one,” he explained. “That said, we accept what happened in the ’82 movie happened in ’82. Our movie is set in 2010. We built a mythology that spans the intervening 28 years of, ‘Here’s what we think happened with Kevin Flynn and with [nefarious software corporation] ENCOM and all those principle characters. Here’s what we think happened inside the Tron universe and in the real world.” Read more...

UPDATE: Due to rain, fans should now show up for the chance to be a part of the film at 10am, not 3am!
Are you a fan of Russell Brand? Jonah Hill? Judd Apatow? Yeah, they're all pretty kickass. And I'm not just saying that because of Brand's special relationship with MTV Movies Editor Josh Horowitz.
Two of the three are going to be on-hand this weekend. In New York City. Take that San Diego Comic-Con goers! You guys can all enjoy your "District 9"s and your "Alice in Wonderland"s. We get a LIVE concert performance -- check that, a FREE LIVE concert performance -- from no less a personage than the legendary Aldous Snow. Suck it, 'Con-goers!!

With most of the MTV Movies team on their way to San Diego and Comic-Con officially getting underway tomorrow, I figure I ought to show the annual geek gathering some love. So today's post highlights the many different guides to getting the most out of the convention from Around the Blogosphere. There are a surprising number of niche-focused features, and I've tried to round most of those up along with a general breakdown or two. Even if, like me, you're unable to attend this year, you can at least live vicariously through this guides. Woo.
-- First up is a day-by-day breakdown of the essential panels to catch at SDCC, io9's "Your Can't-Miss-It Guide To Comic Con 2009!" My personal pick is the one for Mike Judge's "Extract." "Idiocracy" didn't thrill me, but I grew up on "Beavis & Butthead." Also, "Office Space" is one of the greatest comedies. Ever. (io9) Read more...

What can I say? I have "Alice in Wonderland" on the brain today. Can you blame me? The debut trailer for Tim Burton's March 2010 take on Lewis Carroll's story all sorts of great.
So of course when I navigated my way over to eBay today, I plugged "Alice in Wonderland" into the search instead of my usual set of phrases. I figured I'd find a cool animation cel from the animated Disney classic. Instead I found this... thing. I don't know what it is. Sculpture? Toy? Material awesome? All of those things I suspect. The worst part about writing this column every day (okay okay... most days) is that half the time -- more than half the time even -- I'm finding stuff that I desperately want to dig into the savings for. Not that I have. Or will.
Yet. Read more...

WOW. As a longtime fan of all things "Alice in Wonderland"-related, I've been looking forward to Tim Burton's take on Lewis Carroll's stories with something that far exceeds "great interest." It's more like "rabid enthusiasm," or "release more content before I go postal." And now that the first in-motion look at the movie has arrived, I find my vocabulary pared down to a single word: WOW!
For those of you fretting and raising eyebrows over this new Alice's (Mia Wasikowska) age or Johnny Depp's (he plays the Mad Hatter) star billing, know that Burton's story is a sort-of sequel to the Carroll original. You'll see all sorts of familiar characters and locales of course, but things have changed -- and quite a bit -- since Alice's first visit to Wonderland.
UPDATE: Apparently a certain website got a little overexcited about the "Alice" trailer and decided to run it a day early. These things happen. We've been asked to pull it down, and will of course comply out of respect for Disney, Burton and his talented team.
Keeping reading for some thoughts on the shiny newness. Read more...
