A little background might be in order before the above headline makes any sense. There's this HBO Original Series called "Entourage." Maybe you've heard of it. Four pals from New York City move to Los Angeles when one of them, Vinny Chase (Adrian Grenier) makes a name for himself as a Hollywood star. The half-hour comedy series invites viewer to join Chase and his crew in sampling the sweet, sweet celebrity high life. Needless to say, cameo appearances and pop culture references abound.
A recent episode poked a little bit of fun at "Funny People" star Seth Rogen. It was more than a little bit really. Rogen's "ugliness" was pegged as "oddly fascinating," and a couple of characters questioned the plausibility of Katherine Heigl ever sleeping with his character in Judd Apatow's 2007 comedy "Knocked Up." Nothing terribly out of line mind you, but Rogen wasn't pleased.
The funnyman fired back at series creator Doug Ellin and his crew in some comments to E! (via MovieLine):
“Yeah, those ['Entourage'] guys are a--holes. I actually ran into Matt… Kevin Dillon in a Starbucks. And he’s like ‘you know, I’ve got to kind of apologize because apparently the guy who created our show doesn’t like you so much.’ And I said ‘well I have reason to believe because I think [showrunner] Doug Ellin is a moron from all I can understand so it makes sense he doesn’t like me.’ And I’ve kind of said some disparaging things about the show. Although in our defense, [producer] Mark Wahlberg called us misogynistic in an interview, so I think they kind of started that… it’s on. Luckily I never have and never plan on watching 'Entourage.'”
So there it is. Seth Rogen. Not an "Entourage" fan. And apparently a poor sport. Whatever his opinion of Ellin and "Entourage" might be, it strikes me as profoundly unprofessional to say those things in the context of an interview. I'm a fan of Rogen and the HBO series both, but his response here is out of line in comparison to the "Entourage" digs.
It's also a little bit hypocritical, given what Rogen had to say on the red carpet at the "Funny People" premiere. Don't take my word for it... see for yourself:
